It's later the same day that the two of you leave the apartment. Hendery says that there is some housekeeping to do, so you’re not sure why you’re leaving the house, but whatever. You try to not look overly curious as you walk down the sidewalk, the various shades of greens and browns in the trees hard to ignore.
Small businesses and apartment houses crowd the streets, and you let yourself be curious around these.
“What kind of business is this?” You ask after passing by a store with red and yellow decorations on the walls.
“Ah, it’s a bakery. It’s a place that makes traditional breads and pastries from Hong Kong and Macau.” Hendery leans slightly down to make sure he’s heard above the loud ambiance of the block.
You furrow your eyebrows further at his explanation. “I’ve done extensive research about earth and yet I’m not really familiar with Macau.”
And at these words, his thoughts start to bubble up with emotion and energy. “Well, my family is from Macau, so consider me an expert,” his grin practically as radiant as the sun. If you could forget his personality, this would’ve been the moment you fall in love.
But his personality is still very much a factor. No smile is bright enough to make you forget it. He spots a crumpled twenty-dollar bill on the ground and eagerly picks it up. “Sweet! Must be my lucky day.” After stuffing it into his wallet, he sucks at his teeth, gives up, and sticks the same hand that picked up the cash in his mouth.
And after peering into his thoughts, he doesn’t know that he just committed a crime against nature. Hendery just keeps walking and stops in front of some sad looking corner store. “Our first stop of the day, Jaemin’s Drug Store.”
Your confusion must be clear on your features, because he actually pauses to regard you. You didn’t know he had the emotional awareness in him. “What are we doing here?”
The bell chimes overhead as you step inside. “This is my part-time job after classes, so it’s now your part-time job too.”
Goddess you wish you weren’t in this position. Not only are you stuck on earth with some boy, but you also have to work a job with said boy. But there isn’t anything you can do, so you stand next to Hendery as he greets the person at the checkout counter.
The best way to describe the man behind the counter is pretty. Sure, he has some prominent muscles, but soft facial features make you feel at ease around the stranger.
Hendery cups the other man’s hand and pats his back in greeting, the ‘bro hug’ that you’ve seen referenced in media. “Jaemin, man, what’s up,” and based on the tone, it’s more of a statement than a question.
“‘Dery, man, what's u-” the pretty man, Jaemin, stops talking mid sentence as he makes eye contact with you. “Oh hey, ready to check out?”
You suppose he thinks you’re a customer, but right before you correct him, Hendery speaks for you. “Nah she’s here with me. She’s my, uh…” he trails off, not knowing how to finish the sentence.
“His cousin, yeah.” You tell Jaemin you name and smile as politely as you can.
“So, uh, my cousin here is going to be in the city for a while and I’m responsible for her. You think she can get a job? Same hours as me?”
“‘Responsible for her?' You make your cousin sound like a dog, man.” Jaemin’s smile doesn’t leave his face, clearly teasing.
Hendery scoffs. “She might as well be. My aunt put me in charge, but she is so needy.”
Just like the day prior, the anger inside you swirls around, a tropical storm about to form a hurricane. And as Jaemin turns towards you, his thoughts indicate that he sees your rage, and wants to deflect.
Jaemin looks at Hendery. “Alright man,” Jaemin turns back to you. “You can have the job, sure. I don’t really give a fuck.”
~
“So when you flirt with me at work, how are you going to explain that to Jaemin?” You ask Hendery, feeling the rush of cool air on your skin as the two of you enter the grocery store.
You hear his thoughts completely pause before he smacks a hand to his forehead. “I don’t kn- wait, wait. You were the one that said cousins!” Hendery turns towards you incredulously.
You want to continue the conversation, something about how he should think these things through better. But the words catch in your throat as you process what’s in front of you.
Shelf after shelf, aisle after aisle of stuff. You hear a small cough as you stare at all the food, toys, cleaning supplies, medicines…
This must be another one of those moments in which your your emotions are as easy to read as a children’s book. Hendery’s voice cuts in, “welcome to Walmart. It’s not my first choice of stores, but it’s the cheapest and I’m broke.”
A couple of beats pass, and then you feel hands on your shoulders as Hendery escorts you to the side. You can hear the awkwardness in his voice as he explains, “gotta move out of the way for others.”
“Why?”
“Why do we have to move out of the way for others?” Hendery questions. “I feel like that’s just an unspoken ru-”
“No no,” you shake your hands in front of you as you interrupt him. “I mean, why is there so much? There’s no way everything in here gets used. And there’s so many grocery stores too!” You finally turn away from the aisles to look up at Hendery. “What if the food goes bad before its bought? I remember researching the socioeconomic disparities that exist even in the wealthiest nations.”
Hendery looks at you with somber eyes. “Do you want the short answer or the long one?”
You reply after a moment of contemplation. “Short answer. I may be too overwhelmed with the long one at the moment.”
The boy shrugs and looks back to the aisles. “What you're looking at is called late-stage capitalism. Basically, some people figured out they were better than others at making certain things, so they offered their goods and services for a price. Fast forward like 200+ years, multiply this system also by, like, 200 times, and, uh, boom.” The way Hendery explains it makes it sound so simple, as if there is a simple explanation for why there is an overabundance. You make a mental note to research this when Hendery sleeps later. You just nod your head in response to his explanation and let him lead the way around.
Hendery picks up a loaf of bread and scrutinizes it thoroughly. Seemingly satisfied, he puts it in the cart with a singular squeaky wheel and walks over to the area by a large sign that reads ‘PRODUCE’. An employee stands next to a tall table with a small sign and some green cubes on a plate. “So, wait. Can you eat? I know you said you don’t have to, but, like, can you?” The boy tilts his head down towards you as he asks.
“Yes, I can.”
A smile breaks out on Hendery’s face. “Good, because it would be so fucking sad if you couldn’t experience the pure satisfaction that is a good cucumber.” He picks up a toothpick and hands it to you before grabbing one for himself.
It’s bizarre how pleasant this simple sentence is to you. Hendery exhibiting some sort of personality with dislikes and desires is normal, but it makes him seem like more of a person. He’s had plenty of complex thoughts that you hadn’t paid mind to, but his adoration of cucumbers grounds him as a human being, rather than just some guy in your head. And sure, it’s an act of basic manners, but he handed you the sample before feeding himself.
You push away the wave of emotions and pop the green cube in your mouth. At once, you understand Hendery’s appetite for the fruit. The taste is far from complex, but its refreshing and light.
“Good, yeah?” Hendery asks as he pulls a green bag from a roll and turns to inspect the cucumbers, just as he did with the bread earlier.
“Yeah, good.”
~
The sun is starting to set by the time Hendery unlocks his apartment door. You had every intention of helping him put the food away, but bright orange hues travel through the window glass onto your face. It’s almost like you aren’t in control of you body, the way you immediately gravitate towards the view.
Hendery calls your name out across the small space. “Did you see what bag I put the cucumbers in?” His voice gets slightly louder as he turns to look towards you. “Hey wait, how’d you get the window open? You couldn’t do it yesterday.” You can practically hear the cogs in his head whirring. But you have to admit, he’s only slightly less oblivious than you had thought.
“I asked the neighbor next door. He was confused by my outfit but helped anyway. Nice guy. Handsome, too.”
Almost instantly, Hendery’s thoughts go from intrigue to jealousy. “Don’t speak to people you don’t know,” he grits out between clamped teeth. This doesn’t make sense, though. Hendery has no right to be jealous. The two of you have known each other for less than 2 days and he already thinks you belong to him. But because he doesn’t say anything aloud, you keep your mouth shut. You want to keep your mind reading a secret for as long as possible.

a/n: hellooooooo! thank you guys so much for being patient! i wonder if this story is how you thought it would be. like, it started out really goofy but got pretty introspective. i feel like that's something i tend to do with my fics - start silly and slowly integrate some more serious/thought provoking bits about the world. idk maybe thats weird but who cares its my fic. talk to you guys next update :3
Exactly 12 hours later, Hendery finds himself curled against himself on his bed. His head is pounding like a typhoon in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, causing him to groan beneath his blanket. But, it’s not a blanket. It’s one of his towels.
His memory is mostly there, though it hurts like hell every waking moment to just exist, let alone think. It’s when he remembers the events of the day before and the magic-filled dreams that he hears humming around the corner in the living room area. Well, it’s more like a TV, couch, and table right beyond the kitchen in this tiny studio, but Hendery likes to think of it as a living room. Hendery racks his brain for explanations behind the humming sound. Maybe one of his friends came over? Xiaojun and Yangyang sometimes smoke with him, but to not remember them coming over? And the humming seems distinctly feminine.
Then he notices that his bed is made up with clean sheets. Confused out of his mind, he slowly gets up with a cacophony of groans. In the back of mind, a small voice tells him to grab some sort of weapon. Reaching blindly across the dresser, he picks up the first sturdy thing his fingers can grab onto. Not bothering to even look at the object, he raises it above his head and rounds the corner to the living room area. The second he sees your figure, he loses his grip on his beer opener, jaw slack.
~
You hear the boy before you see him. A combination of his jumbled thoughts and the sound of stumbling about. You don’t turn around – too enamored by the vision of the sea right outside the window – but you hear something metallic hit the cheap vinyl floor. “Glad to know my powers still work on earth.”
After a noticeable period of silence, you turn towards Hendery with a smirk on your face. He’s standing there, eyes wide with the cogs of his mind spinning faster than they have in months. What the fuck what the fuck she’s real she’s real what the fuck is she really a goddess what in the hell am I still high or drunk still or-
You silence his thoughts by holding up a hand. That’s when you see what he dropped to the floor, moving your hand to gesture towards the shiny object. “Was that what you picked up to defend yourself against me?” You hold back a scoff as you walk forward to pick it up. You don’t appreciate how his eyes follow down as you bend over, his thoughts insanely pornographic. “What even is this?” You scrutinize the metal device to glance back at Hendery, raising an eyebrow.
“It’s- you-” He straightens his shoulders and clears his throat. “What, in the fuck, is going on?” he pointedly claps his hands towards you. His face is the most serious you’ve seen so far. Granted, you’ve only been around the guy for about two hours, excluding when he passed out.
“I asked first, little boy. You had it raised above your head, obviously some sort of defense. What, did you think I was an attacker and this is your weapon?” Hendery’s thoughts latched onto that phrase – little boy. But you can’t quite figure out why, not that you care either. You're more perplexed by his oblivion to the fact that you weren’t looking at him when he came in. Isn’t he curious how you know that the object was raised?
“It’s a beer opener that looks like a surfboard. Now you answer my question – what is going on?”
You rack your brain, trying to remember what surfboards are used for. You walk back to the window and look out, seeing small figures in the distance. “Is that what those people are doing? Surfboarding?”
The boy walks over to stand next to you by the window, brushing your shoulders. You instinctively move over a bit, not sure if it’s to give him room or out of discomfort. He smiles softly, eyes glazing over as if remembering something. “Yeah, surfing,” but the spell is broken as he turns to face you. “So, you're real?”
You figure that it’s time to answer Hendery’s questions. You walk over to the couch and sit, the boy following behind you. “Yesterday, while you were under the influence, you called my number by mistake. Recall, though, that it’s not possible to access the Goddess Hotline by mistake. So, though you were catfished,” you mentally give yourself a pat on the back for remembering the correct term, “the All Mighty One – or the universe to you – saw it fit for you to be given the number of the Goddess Hotline.” You pause for a moment to let your words sink in. Hendery’s thoughts are still full of the nonstop oh my god she’s real nonsense, albeit a bit muted while he considers your words. “After conversing for a bit, you made the wish for me to stay by your side until I fall in love with you,” you decide to leave out the sex part, hoping that he had forgotten about it.
Unfortunately, his thoughts indicate that he hadn’t forgotten. But he doesn’t vocalize this. “Then I just what, passed out from pure shock?”
You’ve tried to lie before, countless times. But something in the All Mighty One’s plan for the world is to forbid goddesses from lying. So, you force the truth out of your mouth, words feeling acidic on your tongue. “Actually, I lost my temper and cursed you to fall asleep for exactly 12 hours. I moved you to your bed, tidied up the place, and went to the store for some new clothes.”
This seems to pull Hendery fully out of his stupor. Any lingering feelings of drowsiness and confusion flee away as fast as a dog running after its favorite ball. His whole demeanor changes, eyes narrowing. “Where did you get those clothes?”
You make a pointed effort to not shrink at the icy tone or the pointed stare. “The shop across the street. I wasn’t able to go further away, due to the specifics of your wish,” you look down at your new attire. In keeping up with earth’s culture, you had developed a particular love for the outfits featured in Sex and the City. You had never seen the show, but you imagine that the characters would appreciate the low-waisted, dark gray cargo pants paired with a forest green tube top and matching jewelry. “Ah!” You remember receiving something from the woman in the store. You reach into the front left pocket of your new pants and pull out a neatly folded slip of paper.
“Well, you do look good. Like, you were an 7 but now you're an 8.5.” he says as you hand over the receipt, seemingly ignoring the way you roll your eyes. He quickly unfolds the slip with deft fingers, eyes narrowing as he skims the paper. Without looking up, he asks, “I guess you used your magic to pay for this?” But before you get the chance to answer his question, his eyes grow to the size of saucers. “Why does the card number match my debit card?” He does look up at this. His thoughts are full of disbelief and anger and are so hot you once again have to ground yourself to not physically flinch.
“Though I’ve only used my powers a couple of times on earth, I get drained after using them – even if the spell is a small one. I did not have enough energy to deceive the poor worker into letting me walk away. I also believe that you should have thought more about the outcome of your wish – considered more of the long-term consequences for wishing me to stay by your side.” You hope it does not sound snarky or self-righteous, but you’re not about to show weakness in front of the immature boy.
And, to his credit, he just lies back on the beaten couch, looks at the ceiling, and whispers “What the fuck did I get myself into?” Then, with a sigh through puffed cheeks, he straightens back up and turns to you. “Okay. Sure. I have some questions.”
“I would expect as much. Ask away.”
It’s a fast rally between the two of you, questions getting answered without hesitation.
He begins. “Just to be clear, you don’t have money?”
“No, that’s why I took your wallet.”
“How much do you know about the world – society?”
You shrug, “I suppose I know the basics.”
“How the hell am I supposed to explain this to people?”
“Maybe you should have considered that before asking your wish.”
“Do you have any skills?”
“Well, I have some magic. I’m a level one goddess.”
Hendery pauses at that answer. “What does level one mean?”
You tilt your head up at this, smiling with pride. “It’s the highest level you can be. Not only do I have the ability, but I have the jurisdiction to cast pretty much any spell.”
“Do you have any skills that a human would have? Cause I have a job and, if we have to stick together, it’s easiest to just get you a job with me.”
You ponder for a second, putting your pointer finger to the corner of your mouth and staring at the ceiling. “I am very charming and pretty. In the past, humans tend to go along with whatever I ask.”
The cloud of confusion taking up space in Hendery’s mind seems to be a permanent fixture. Every sort of external stimulus raises questions and intrigue in his thoughts. You might have thought the curiosity was charming, if not for the equally present loser virgin masturbatory thoughts. “Wait, what do you mean in the past? How old are you? How many wishes have you granted? What’s your job job? How old are you?”
You wish you had the ability to raise a single eyebrow, but you can’t, so you raise both. “I thought it was considered rude on earth to ask a woman their age.”
Hendery scoffs, “You’re hardly a wo-” he stops himself from finishing the thought, but you already know what he was going to say. He closes his eyes and cringes.
“If I’m not a woman, then what am I?”
“A goddess, I suppose,” he replies guilty. He cards his fingers though his raven hair and stands up. “Before anything else happens, I gotta eat something.” He sighs, looking towards you as he walks away. “Are you hungry? Wait, what do you even eat?”
You smile. “Fortunately for your wallet, I do not require food.”
“Well, thank god for tiny miracles.” He stops walking. “Or, I guess, I should say thank goddess.”
As childish as the joke is, you can’t stop the small laugh from escaping you. You can feel his thoughts flutter at the small validation, and you decide to answer his most pressing question. “My age cannot easily be translated into human years. However, a rough estimate would be around 127.” You hear a choking sound from the kitchen. “I’m quite young actually.”

a/n: and perhaps, what are your thoughts on what the story will be? how do you like it so far? i hope yall enjoyed!
Hendery’s phone emits the same bright light as strong winds whip around the room, forcing you to fall forward. And, of course, you fall straight into the man who wished for you to stay and fall in love with him.
You thud into his chest, sending both of you tumbling to the ground. You feel Hendery start to move below you before you have the chance to get up. His hands are trapped between your bodies and even without reading his thoughts, you can tell he is enjoying the physical contact. Immensely.
“Looks like I cushioned your fall, Goddess,” his eyebrows move in a way that brings you extreme discomfort.
You push off him in disgust. “Ugh my head is killing me.” Closing your eyes, you rub your head with the tip of your wand in your left hand, just an old habit that mentally relaxes you.
Hendery is quick to stand up beside you, whistling a low note. “So, wait. What the fuck was that?”
You pause your self-soothing and look at him defeated. “Yes, that has never happened. I can only assume it’s because you made a wish about me. Usually, people ask for money or power.” And suddenly you sense a shift in Hendery’s thoughts. He’s staring at you.
“What?” You ask, hoping he’ll knock it off.
“You changed.”
You look down, confusedly. You don’t feel or look any different.
“Pardon me?”
Hendery’s eyes go wide and he gestures open palms to you. “You! You used to be all sparkly and shit. I mean, your clothes are still wack, but you even had a wand!” You jerkily bring your hand to your face to see that, indeed, you now seem to be holding just an ordinary pen. And what in the universe happened to your shimmer?
Hendery continues, “now you just look, uhm…” He trails off and looks almost sheepish. Kun would be proud of him for watching his words.
But you’re in too much shock to think about what Hendery was trying to say. You're not paying attention to him at all, really. Previous humans have told you about the glow of shimmery air around your presence and you’ve typically paid it no mind, it’s just an ordinary thing to you. But to lose it? This has never happened before.
You snap your head towards the man. Plastering on your sweetest smile and most pleasing voice, you ask, “Hendery, would you be a dear and let me borrow your phone.”
He looks freaked out by your change of demeanor but holds it out anyway. “What do you need it for?”
“I need to make a call.”
“Who the hell are you calling?”
“You’ll find out eventually,” you murmur.
Hendery sees you punch in the numbers and hold the device up to your ear. He overhears the dial tone, then someone on the other line. It’s strange, though, because it sounds exactly like the way phone calls sound in cartoons – the rapid chipmunk voice faintly making its way to his ear.
And it’s obvious to Hendery that you are frustrated. You keep sighing and making faces like you’re about to start speaking, but you’re constantly getting interrupted by this tinny voice reminiscent of Alvin and the Chipmunks. After one more defeated sigh, Hendery sees you hang up.
“So?” He asks, his thoughts full of anticipation.
“Well, the contract went through,” you grumble. “But there are some…” You fight against the urge to lift your wand pen to your head and self-soothe. “Stipulations, I suppose.”
Hendery’s eyes narrow. “And that means…?” He waves a hand, asking you to continue.
And even though it's no longer your wand – just a simple pen – you decide to give in to the urge, lifting the device to your scalp. With your right hand free, you gesture your full hand in Hendery’s direction. “You said that you wish,” you then gesture to yourself by placing the hand on your chest, “for me to remain ‘by your side’ until I fall in love with you.” Your arm falls defeatedly for what feels like the thousandth time. “Due to the wording of your wish, I am to always stay within 100 meters of you. This is not ideal, but since I have a responsibility to uphold, I will do as you wish.”
A smile breaks across the man’s face, this one more snarky than charming. “Well, that’s perfect for me. The more you're near me, the shorter it will take for you to fall irresistibly in love with me.” Although he doesn’t say it aloud, you can tell he was thinking about why he wants you to fall in love with him – the supposed infinite sex. Luckily, his thoughts quickly shift to being more innocent. “Wait. So, why’d you lose your sparkle and wand thingy?” He repeats his earlier gesture of rubbing his chin, trying – and failing – to appear in deep thought.
With a weary smile, you close your eyes and take a deep breath. “The All Mighty One seems to think it will be easier for me to embrace the world of humans if I am to fulfill your wish.” There's a few moments of silence, something you have not experienced since Hendery called the Goddess Hotline. Even his thoughts are quiet. You slowly and carefully open your eyes.
You see the man sitting on the couch, feet propped up on the coffee table. His eyes are locked on his phone in front of him. Realizing that this is just how it’s going to be now, you decide to investigate the lines of sunlight peeking through the window covering. You stare at the covering for a moment before asking, “Excuse me, could you assist me with this?”
Hendery just ignores you. You see his finger idly sliding up as he breathes sharply with his nose, a shit-eating grin on his face. What is he laughing at? You feel anger well up from deep within you, already irritable from the whole situation.
“Hey, help me look out the window.” His eyes are still unwavering from his phone.
And for some reason, that’s the final straw. It wasn’t the misogynistic thoughts or the lack of intelligence Hendery seemingly possesses. It’s this. Getting ignored. Without thinking, you feel the anger bubble to the surface as you recite the incantation. You don’t even mean to do it. It’s just something about the audacity of this man – no, boy – that has you saying the words.
“By moon’s soft glow and earth’s embrace,
Let slumber weave its silver lace.
Twelve hours deep, no dream nor sound,
In peaceful rest, your peace be found.”
Hendery’s eyes roll back as his head tips to the side, falling asleep.

a/n: hello! sorry for the delay! as i said in an earlier post, i literally just moved across the us (for a man....). obviously i still have a routine to figure out but hopefully there will be no more delays etc. nonetheless, i hope you enjoy!
It's been a while... I struggle a looooot with writing smut. Which is why I write really slowly. Might or might not be why MIMS's latest chapter was smut free. 😹 ANYWAY! Here's individual updates for everything:
Kiss, Bite, Repeat : I only need to write that Winwin spicy scene. I wrote around it, it's literally the only thing I'm missing.
Make It Make Sense : I have some of it written. But not much. I AM inspired though, so I write in it when I'm in the mood.
The Cat He Chose : I'll be honest.. I didn't even start chapter 5 yet. I don't know why, tbh. Because I have the ideas, the plot and everything... It's just not happening at the moment. But fret not, little babies. I plan on reading some werewolf stories to try and put myself in the mood for it. Crossing my fingies and all.
You Belong To Me, Even When You Don't : It's going well. I'm writing in it as we speak. I have like... Every single spicy scene in mind for the whole thing. I'm just... Digging for some plot. Because as much as I like me some fucking (the only action I get, really)... I need plot or I just can't write it... 🥲
Imagines : I have.... A Jongho, Yunho, Suho, Lee Joon, Haechan and Xiaojun... All halfway done... It is what it is, I guess. 😹
Pick Your Poison, Pick Your Boy : I'll be honest... I didn't write in those in a little while. I keep forgetting about those. But I am going to write that camboy!Ten whether I like it or not. 🙃 (I say that like it's a freaking chore.. but it's not. 😹)
Christmas advent calendar : You saw me post about it by accident.. So I might as well! 😹 I finished Ryo's and started Doyoung, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark and Jaemin. I'm having a lot of fun writing those, ngl. 😹 I'm just crossing my fingers I'll be done for December. If not, it'll be a partial advent with the ones I was able to finish. (Before you assume anything, not all days has smut. Some are just cutesie dates on xmas and stuff like that. Writing 25 smut focused one shots with xmas as a theme? I wouldn't have survived that 😹)
Kinktober 2026 : Not doing like last year. It'll just be a one shot posted on October 31st. And because the Advent Calendar is NCT- I decided the kinktober one shot will be Ateez. More precisely, my bias line; Yeosang, Yunho, Jongho and Mingi. No promises it'll be heavy smut. But it will be Halloween themed. So there's that.
So that's everything. Hope you enjoyed that very not helpful update.

📂 AT QN GROUP BUILDING
you stepped out of the car, tilting your head back instinctively as the QN Group building towered above you. it was so tall it almost made your neck ache just looking at it. you stood there for a second longer than you meant to, blinking up at it. “okay… wow,” you muttered under your breath.
dang, this wasn’t just a building. it was a statement. you walked inside, immediately hit by the change in atmosphere. the air was cooler, cleaner, carrying a faint scent of vanilla mixed with something expensive you couldn’t quite name. marble floors stretched endlessly under your feet, reflecting soft light that made everything look too polished to feel real.
you barely had time to process it before someone approached you,“miss zheng y/n?”you turned slightly. a man in a neat suit stood beside you, posture professional but not cold.
“i’m sicheng,” he introduced himself politely. “mr qian’s assistant. i’ll guide you to the fortieth floor.”you nodded slowly, still a little overwhelmed. “uh… hi,” you said, slightly awkward.
he gave you a small, understanding smile like he was used to people reacting this way, “this way, please.” you followed him deeper inside the building, your footsteps softer against the marble than you expected.
elevators opened almost instantly, smooth and silent, like the entire building moved without effort. as you were led inside, your eyes wandered again despite yourself.
glass walls. expensive art. staff moving like everything had a purpose. everything felt controlled. precise. untouchable, you swallowed quietly.
yeah… this is definitely serious money.
the elevator doors slid shut with a soft chime, sealing you inside a space that felt more like a private capsule than a lift. the silence was almost uncomfortable, broken only by the faint hum of movement as it began to rise.
you stood slightly to the side, glancing at the mirrored walls that reflected you back in a way that felt too sharp, too aware. beside you, sicheng remained perfectly composed, hands folded neatly in front of him like this was just another normal part of his day.
you, on the other hand, were very aware of your heartbeat. “so…” you started awkwardly, then immediately regretted it. sicheng looked at you politely. “yes, miss zheng?”
you hesitated, “he’s… expecting me?” oh god what the hell are you saying...it sounded stupid the moment it left your mouth. sicheng blinked once, then nodded. “yes. mr qian doesn’t usually request meetings unless he is expecting someone.”
you nodded slowly, pretending that helped your nerves instead of making them worse. the elevator continued upward, numbers changing faster than your thoughts could settle. you exhaled quietly and shifted your weight, staring at the floor for a moment.
fortieth floor,
his office...
the words felt heavier now that they were actually real.finally, with a soft sound, the elevator slowed. the doors opened smoothly and the atmosphere changed immediately.
the fortieth floor was quieter. more private. the lighting warmer, the space wider, more refined in a way that made everything feel even more expensive than the floors below. there was no chaos here, only beaming control.
sicheng stepped out first, motioning politely, “this way, please.” you followed him, your steps slightly slower now as you took in the hallway. each step felt like you were walking deeper into the depth of the decision you haven't decided yet.
sicheng walked a few steps ahead of you, stopping right in front of the large marble doors. he turned slightly, gesturing politely.“you can go in,” he said.
you swallowed hard, your teeth practically gritting together from nervousness as you stood there for a second longer than necessary. you and sicheng exchanged a small, respectful bow.
both of you aware of how absurdly formal everything suddenly felt then, slowly, you pushed the door open. inside, qian kun was already there.
seated behind a marble desk that looked just as expensive as everything else in the building, he didn’t look surprised to see you. not even slightly, he was just aware like he had already calculated this moment would happen.
his gaze lifted to you briefly, calm and steady, before he motioned toward the chair in front of him, “have a seat.”
you stepped inside and closed the door behind you, the soft click sounding far louder than it should’ve. wow, you thought faintly. i’m really setting up my own marriage right now.
you walked forward slowly and sat down, straightening slightly as you looked at him across the desk. everything about him felt different from you. his posture, his silence, even the way he carried authority effortlessly.
you hesitated for a moment before speaking, “uh… that day,” you started, voice slightly unsure. “i’m sorry… and thank you.” kun tilted his head faintly, “why?”
you exhaled, fingers fidgeting slightly in your lap. “you dropped me off. and… i cried in front of you. it was embarrassing.” his expression didn’t change much, but his tone softened just slightly.
“no need,” he said. “it’s understandable. you weren’t in stable condition.” you nodded slowly, the tension in your shoulders easing a fraction then he leaned back slightly, cutting straight to what he actually wanted to know.
“so,” he said calmly, “have you thought about my offer?"
you had expected that question. still, hearing it made your heart beat a little faster. you lifted your gaze to him, gathering whatever courage you could find. “yes,” you said honestly. “i did think about it… a lot, to be honest.” a brief pause followed, then you exhaled once, steadying yourself.
“let’s get married,” you said. “i’ll be your wife.”
the words came out simpler than you expected, almost too calm for something so life-altering. kun’s eyes narrowed slightly, studying you for a moment longer than usual.
then, the faintest hint of expression shifted at the corner of his lips, not quite a smile, but something close enough to feel like approval. “good thinking,” he said.
kun gave a single nod, as if your answer had confirmed a prediction he had already made days ago. then he cleared his throat lightly and opened a folder resting on his desk, his eyes scanned a page briefly before looking back at you. “when would you like to set the wedding date?”
he asked it with the same tone someone would use when discussing a meeting schedule. your eyes widened. wait, it's a wedding, wedding preparations. there was a difference between agreeing to get married and suddenly discussing dates.
“that early?” you blurted out, a slight frown appeared on your face. “i haven't even told my mom yet.” kun remained completely unfazed, “what are you waiting for?” you stared at him and he stared back.
“call her.” the suggestion came so naturally that you almost laughed, “just call her?” you repeated. "yes.” he replied with an unfazed expressjon.
“and tell her what exactly?”you threw your hands up slightly, “hey mom, remember when i got involved in a national scandal? well, i met a rich ceo at the hospital and now we're getting married!"
kun considered your words for a second. "that sounds about right.” you looked at him in disbelief, "that was sarcasm.” he nods his head, “i know.” which somehow made it worse.
you let out a long groan and covered your face with both hands, “this is a disaster.” he lookrd down onto the unattended opened file he wasn't really reading, “not yet.” he added then,“you haven't told her.”
you slowly lowered your hands, staring at him, “do you enjoy stressing people out?”, "no." the answer came suspiciously fast. kun leaned back slightly in his chair, “if calling makes you uncomfortable, we can visit her.”
his tone softened by a fraction, “if you want to.” the room grew quiet, you blinked at him. for someone who usually spoke like a business contract come to life, that was surprisingly considerate.
you looked down at your hands for a moment before glancing back at him, "you'd actually come with me?”
“of course.” he said with a slight raise of the eyebrows. he looked genuinely confused by the question. “i'm part of the problem.” you snorted, “you mean the situation.” he shrugged, “same thing.” for the first time, you saw the corner of his mouth twitch upward. not quite a smile but dangerously close to one.
you suddenly sat up straighter, lightly slapping your palm against the desk as a thought struck you, “oh!” kun looked up from the contract, “if you wanted me to be your wife,” you said, a hint of sarcasm slipping into your voice, “you didn't even bother giving me your actual phone number.”
you crossed your arms, ending the sentence with a small pout and, honestly? you were a little offended, “do i have to talk to the receptionist every time i want to speak to you?” kun blinked once then, unexpectedly, the corner of his mouth lifted. it was a smile, more like a restrained scoff.
he held out his hand toward you, “mhm?" you stared at him, “what?”
“your phone.”
“ah.” you quickly reached into your purse, pulling out your phone before handing it over, kun took it effortlessly. with one hand, he unlocked the contact screen, typed in his number, and saved it within seconds and then he handed the phone back.
you glanced down at the screen and immediately burst out laughing at the words written on the screen.
老公 (husband)
that was the contact name, you looked up at him, amused “you have some jokes in you.”
“it's not a joke.” the response came instantly, kun raised a brow“is it?” your laughter died down into a smile, for a second, neither of you said anything then—
knock knock, the office door opened slightly. sicheng peeked his head inside. “sir,” he called out, as if something went wrong. kun looked over.
sicheng glanced between the two of you, then sighed dramatically “you have meetings~” his voice stretched the words into a sing-song tune “and you're the owner of a company. you've got things to do.” you blinked, you immediately looked at kun.
somehow, his assistant was talking to the ceo of one of the biggest companies in the country like a mildly disappointing roommate and he was still employed, unlike you.
impressive.
sicheng leaned further against the door frame, “the shareholders unfortunately don't care about your love lifeeee~.”
“it's a business meeting,” kun replied flatly.
“mhm...okay sure, whatever."
“it is.”
“of course.”
you watched the exchange unfold, completely fascinated, the two of them bickered with the ease of people who had known each other for years, sicheng finally looked at you “see? this is what i deal with every day.”
“you're being dramatic.” kun shots back as if he was offended. “i learned from the best.” kun sighed. you bit your lip, trying not to laugh.
honestly, after seeing how intimidating qian kun seemed to the rest of the world, discovering that his assistant talked to him like this felt strangely reassuring, it made him seem... human slightly.
⛸️ FOUR DAYS LATER
the day had finally arrived, the day you were going to tell your mother somehow, agreeing to a contract marriage with qian kun had been easier than explaining it to your own family.
kun had made the arrangements himself. he told you he'd pick you up personally, no assistants, no security team, no chauffeurs opening doors, just him. which, for some reason, made you even more nervous.
you stood in front of your bedroom mirror, smoothing down your white tweed two-piece dress for what had to be the twentieth time, it was one of your favorite outfits.
you had bought it with your prize money years ago, after standing on a podium with a medal hanging around your neck and your future looking impossibly bright. back then, you'd imagined wearing it for interviews, celebrations, important events, not for informing your mother that you were about to suddenly get married.
life was funny like that. your phone buzzed against the vanity table, you glanced down.
老公
你准备好了吗?我在楼下等你。2:01 pm
(are you ready? i'm waiting down. )
you stared at the contact name first then the message, then the contact name again. a small scoff escaped you. “still ridiculous.” and yet...you hadn't changed it.
you quickly ignored that realization. your fingers moved to your earrings, adjusting them carefully before giving yourself one final inspection in the mirror. everything looked fine, perfectly fine.
so why were your palms sweating? you rubbed them against the sides of your dress “it's just mom,” you muttered to yourself then immediately frowned. “actually, that's exactly why i'm nervous.” your reflection offered no useful advice and then with one final deep breath, you grabbed your purse and headed for the door.
the elevator ride downstairs felt far too short. every second brought you closer to the conversation you had been dreading all week. when the elevator doors finally opened, you stepped out into the lobby of the apartment complex and immediately spotted him.
kun stood beside a sleek black car parked outside, no bodyguards, no assistant hovering nearby, just him. one hand rested casually in his pocket while the other held his phone. he looked up the moment you emerged from the building.
his gaze settled on you and and stayed there, for a second longer than usual the sunlight reflected softly against the glass behind him, outlining his silhouette, you slowed slightly not because of him. definitely not because of him.
mostly because your heart suddenly remembered it's cabability of beating faster? kun closed his phone and stepped forward, his eyes briefly swept over your outfit before returning to your face, “you're ready.”
yeah he'd say that, typical.
not a you look nice, not good afternoon just—you're ready, you rolled your eyes internally.
“thank you for the compliment.” faint crease appeared between his brows, “i wasn't giving one.” you pointed at him immediately “see? that's exactly why people think you're cold.”
he sighed, "you look good today." a laugh escaped your lips after you extorted a compliment out of him and for the first time that day, some of the nervousness faded, just a little though.
kun opened the passenger-side door for you, “shall we?” the question was simple but the meaning behind it felt much bigger, you looked at him then at the car then back at him and finally nodded.
just as kun reached for the passenger door, you suddenly grabbed his wrist. “wait.” he paused immediately. before he could ask anything, you lifted a finger and pressed it lightly against his lips, for the first time since you'd met him, you saw genuine surprise flicker across his face.
his eyes widened slightly, not dramatically but enough. “what are you doing?” he asked quietly. “shh.” you leaned in closer. “you see those guys?” your eyes shifted subtly toward a nearby car. kun followed your gaze.
two men were attempting to hide behind the vehicle, attempting being the key word. one of them was holding a camera large enough to qualify as evidence. they were about as discreet as a fireworks display.
kun's expression immediately cooled, “who are they?” he questioned in a serious tone. “dispatch.” you replied without hesitation, “they're probably curious how miserable i am after my downfall.” your eyes narrowed, then a slow, mischievous smirk appeared “but...”
kun immediately disliked that look, he could tell. “we should fuel some rumors for our marriage, don't you think?” his brows furrowed “you're suggesting we let strangers photograph you without your consent?”
“no.” you pointed at him, “not me.” then you pointed between the two of you, “us.” before he could process what you meant, you grabbed his hand and intertwined your fingers with his.
kun froze completely, his eyes dropped to your joined hands then back to your face and then back to your hands. you leaned closer again.
“pat my head.”
“…what?”
“do it.”
“why?”
“because it'll look cute.”
“cute...?"
“yes.”
kun stared at you and you stared right back.
“they're taking pictures.”
“i'm aware.”
“then do it!”
you practically hissed the last part, kun glanced toward the photographers, and the photographers who suddenly looked very interested in the parking lot and then at you then back at the photographers.
he sighed, a very long sigh. the sigh of a man questioning every decision that had led him to this moment, slowly, awkwardly, his free hand lifted and rested against the back of your head.
pat, then a pause. pat.
the motion was so stiff it looked like he was testing whether human interaction required a manual. you immediately fought the urge to laugh.
“less ai, more human,” you whispered.
“i don't know what that means.”
“just act natural.”
“this is natural.”
“for a robot maybe.”
his eyes narrowed, behind the nearby car, the photographers looked seconds away from passing out from excitement. one of them was practically vibrating, their camera shutters clicked furiously. you could almost imagine tomorrow's headlines.
🚨 Disgraced Figure Skater Spotted With QN Group CEO. Is It A Secret Relationship Or A Tyrst? Head Pats Exchanged—
okay, maybe not that last one...
kun, meanwhile, looked like he wanted to file a formal complaint against him. “are we done?” he asked. “yep.” you released his hand. his gaze lingered briefly on where your fingers had been intertwined, just for a second and then he opened the car door again.
“good.” you grinned “you know, for someone pretending to be my future husband, you're surprisingly cooperative.” kun looked at you, expressionless. "i've already agreed to marry you." then a pause, "you are actually kinda funny.", he returns the compliment "you too."
🏠 AT YOUR MOM'S PLACE
the drive felt much shorter than it should have, perhaps because you spent most of it mentally preparing yourself for what was about to happen or perhaps because every time you started rehearsing a speech in your head, you remembered that your mother was involved and immediately abandoned the idea.
some conversations simply couldn't be prepared for. especially this one. you had called her earlier that morning. all you'd told her was that you wanted to introduce someone, nothing else.
absolutely nothing else which, in hindsight, might have been a mistake because now your mother was probably expecting a boyfriend.
not a future husband.
you groaned quietly and leaned your forehead against the window, “i'm doomed.” kun briefly glanced away from the road, “you'll get through it.” you glanced back at him “easy for you to say.”
“is it?” you turned to look at him. he looked perfectly calm, of course he did. “my mother is going to have questions.” kun replied almost instantly, “i have answers.” you huffed, “that's somehow not comforting.” kun simply hummed.
the conversation died after that. mostly because you were too busy imagining every possible outcome. none of them were good.
when the car finally pulled into the familiar neighborhood, your stomach immediately tightened. it washome. you hadn't realized how nervous you were until you saw it.
the small garden, the familiar front gate, the house you'd grown up in. you swallowed. your heart was falling somewhere between your stomach.
kun parked the car, he then unbuckled his seatbelt. you stepped out of the car together. the afternoon breeze brushed against your face as you stared at the front door. your front door.
the door behind which your mother was currently waiting, completely unaware that her daughter was about to announce a marriage. you looked at kun, he looked back.
“you ready?” he said,
“no.”
“good.”
you frowned, "how is that good?"
"it means you're taking it seriously." he shot back, before you could argue, the front door suddenly swung open.
“y/n!” your mother's voice echoed through the yard, you immediately straightened. and there she was.
standing at the entrance with an excited smile already on her face, then her gaze shifted
to kun.
the smile froze, your mother's eyes widened and then widened some more. her gaze moved from kun to you, back to kun. back to you.
“...qian kun?” she lifted a trembling finger toward him. kun stood beside you, calm as ever. not nervous. not awkward. just... standing there. “hello, madam,” he greeted politely with a small nod. your mother looked between him and you then back at him, the again back at you.
“qian kun?” her lips trembled.
“yes, mom.”
“the hot shot ceo qian kun?”
“yes, mom.”
your mother looked like she was about to short-circuit. you immediately grabbed her shoulders. “okay! inside. let's go inside.”
“why is qian kun standing outside my house,” she whispered. you pushed her through the doorway, “yes, and he'll continue standing there if you don't move.”
even as she walked inside, she kept glancing back over her shoulder, making sure he hadn't suddenly disappeared, unfortunately for your blood pressure.
inside the house, things somehow became worse, your mother completely forgot you existed. the second kun stepped inside, she transformed into the perfect host.
“please sit.” she motioned towards the couch. he politely nodded. “thank you.”
“would you like tea?”
“anything is fine.”
“fruit?”
“that's alright.”
“you should have fruit.”
“...thank you.”
you stared from the side in disbelief, you called her out, "mom." absolutely no response, “mother.” still nothing. "hello! my mother!"
“don't disturb the guest.” then she turned back toward kun. “do you like oranges?” you let out an offended scoff. later, eventually everyone settled into the living room.
well, everyone except you.
somehow, your mother had taken the best seat beside kun while you ended up removing your heels and kneeling on the floor in front of her. you stared at the situation, then at your mother. then at kun, "thanks...for the hospitality.." no one reacted.
you placed your hands neatly on your lap and sat up straight. across from you, kun sat comfortably on the sofa, looking like he belonged there. your mother remained silent for a moment. she was thinking, processing, questioning every life decision that had led to this moment.
then she finally looked at you. “why didn't you tell me?”
there it was.
you swallowed, “tell you what?” “that you were dating him.” your mother pointed directly at kun “and this huge decision of getting married.” her tone wasn't actually scary, not to you but the disappointment hidden underneath it made you feel twelve years old again.
"well..." you scratched your cheek awkwardly, "don't 'well' me." your mother shot back, you immediately shut your mouth. your mother crossed her arms. “how long have you been dating?”
you glanced at kun, for half a second before answering, “a year.”
during the car ride, you explained to him the made up 'how did you guys meet for the first time' story. he was collabrating with a sponsor of yours, and unexpectedly met during work, then how both of you confessed and so on, that led you both to this decision, marriage.
sure, it wasn't as convincible as it sounds. it just felt like if you both haven't met in this situation maybe, in an different universe. you would've met like this. surely.
your mom, let out a horrendous scream, “a YEAR?!” you flinched
“yes?”
“and you didn't tell me?”
“surprise?”
“zheng y/n!” you immediately lowered your head. “sorry..” your mother stared at you in disbelief “you kept a relationship secret for an entire year?” you tried to justify yourself, “i was busy.”
“too busy to tell your mother?”
“okay, i know i'm in the wrong here.”
“because you are wrong!”
you let out a dramatic gasp, your mother ignored you completely. instead, she turned toward kun, her expression softened immediately. the way she turns into a completely different person around him.
“and you,” she said gently. “how did you put up with her for a whole year?” you looked offended. “excuse me?” kun looked at you, then at your mother. a brief pause followed. “it wasn't easy.” you glared at him immediately.
for the first time since arriving, a small smile appeared on your mother's face and judging by the slight twitch at the corner of kun's mouth, he was enjoying this far more than he should have been.
you let out an exaggerated huff and straightened your posture. “anyways!” both your mother and kun looked at you, you lifted your chin stubbornly. “we're getting married, so stop acting like i'm some stray you found on the street.”
“i never said that.”
“you implied it.”
your mother sighed, already looking tired, “y/n.” you hummed? “be quiet for a moment.” you immediately zipped your lips shut. your mother turned her attention back to the matter at hand though her expression remained serious, her voice softened considerably.
“did you meet his family?” your heart skipped, for a split second, your eyes widened.
family? oh no.
you could practically feel kun's gaze shift toward you, you forced a smile onto your face “y-yes!” you nodded enthusiastically, “i did.” another nod. “they like me very much.” across the room, kun narrowed his eyes slightly, just slightly but enough for you to notice.
you immediately looked away before you laughed, your mother seemed satisfied by the answer, thankfully. she let out a slow sigh before patting the empty space beside her. “come here.”
you blinked, then quickly stood up from the floor and moved to sit beside her on the sofa. the second you sat down, she reached over and adjusted a strand of hair behind your ear. a habit she'd had since you were little and suddenly, you felt yourself relax.
your mother looked at you quietly, really looked at you, not as an athlete. not as someone caught in a scandal. not as a future bride.
just her daughter.
“y/n,” she said softly, “you know ever since your father passed away...” her voice grew quieter “how paranoid i've been. your smile faded, “about raising you.” she let out a small laugh “about whether i was making the right decisions.”
her eyes glistened, “about whether you'd meet the right person.” you felt a lump begin to form in your throat. your mother had always been strong. sometimes so strong that you forgot how much she worried and how much she carried alone.
she reached over and squeezed your hand, “if you really want to do this...” her voice trembled slightly. “then you have my blessing.” the room grew quiet, you blinked rapidly trying very hard not to cry.
your mother smiled softly, “make sure to live in harmony.” her eyes briefly moved toward kun before returning to you. “and happiness.” for a moment, nobody spoke. the late afternoon sunlight filtered through the window, casting a warm glow across the room.
the atmosphere itself felt emotional, “thank you, mom.” your voice came out smaller than usual. your mother immediately pulled you into a hug and just like that, your composure shattered.
“mom, don't cry.”
“i'm not crying.”
“your voice is shaking.”
“it doesn't matter.”
your mother laughed through her own tears and held you tighter, across the room, kun watched quietly. his expression unreadable but for the first time since entering the house, his gaze softened, as he watched the two of you and something about the scene made the usually composed ceo look away...
he looked at the scene with such bittersweet emotions, maybe this love. he could've received from his parents..?
a week passed in the blink of an eye, one moment, you were sitting across from qian kun in his office agreeing to a contract marriage and the next, you were drowning in wedding preparations.
dress fittings, venue meetings, guest lists, phone calls and more dress fittings.
every day seemed shorter than the last, disappearing before you could properly process it. whenever you thought about what was happening, someone would hand you another schedule, another form, another decision to mak, it was exhausting.
but strangely enough, it left you with very little time to panic, until today your wedding day. the bridal suite was unusually quiet compared to the chaos outside. staff moved in and out occasionally, making final adjustments, but for the most part, you were alone, alone with your thoughts.
you sat in front of a large mirror, staring at your reflection, the wedding dress flowed around you in layers of white fabric, elegant and beautiful in a way that almost didn't feel real. for a long moment, you simply stared at yourself.
at the veil resting behind your shoulders, at the careful makeup, at the woman in the mirror. you looked like a bride.
a small laugh escaped your lips, disbelieving “wow.” your voice sounded distant, “that's me.” your fingers lightly touched the fabric gathered in your lap.
all your life, you'd imagined countless versions of your future, winning championships, standing on olympic podiums or traveling the world but somehow...you had never imagined this.
never imagined sitting in a wedding dress, preparing to marry qian kun of all people, the realization made your chest tighten but not with fear, just disbelief.
a few weeks ago, your career had been collapsing around you, you'd spent days hidden beneath blankets, convinced your life was over and now you were here.
about to walk down an aisle, about to become someone's wife. you lowered your gaze, the ring resting on the table beside you caught the light your heart skipped, this wasn't a dream.
it wasn't some strange fever-induced hallucination, it was real every bit of it. a soft knock interrupted your thoughts. you glanced toward the door. “come in.”
the door opened slowly and for the first time since sitting down, you finally had to face the reality of what came next.
the wedding was about to begin.
the music echoed softly throughout the venue as you stood near the entrance, your mother's hand gently wrapped around yours. your heart was beating so loudly that you were convinced everyone could hear it.
this was really happening. you took a slow breath and looked ahead. rows of guests filled the seats, their conversations fading as they turned toward you, among them, you immediately spotted familiar faces.
shuhua was sitting near the front, already looking emotional despite the ceremony not even starting yet, the moment she saw you, her eyes widened dramatically.
she looked seconds away from crying, you could practically hear her thoughts from across the room. she actually did it.
beside her sat xinyu, completely glued to her phone. you narrowed your eyes.
seriously?
she is a busy person, of course. brand deals are flooding in for her or doing whatever people did during important life moments nowadays.
your mother followed your gaze, “what's wrong?” you looked back at her with a bittersweet smile, "oh, nothing. it just doesn't feel real.." both of you looked emotional.
then your attention shifted forward again and landed on him, qian kun standing at the end of the aisle.
the black suit fit him perfectly, tailored so well it almost looked unfair. his posture was straight, composed as always, hands folded neatly in front of him while everyone else seemed caught up in the emotions of the moment
he looked calm as ever, for a second, you simply stared because...wow, he was really handsome, ridiculously handsome. the kind of handsome that made you wonder if people got distracted during business meetings.
your eyes lingered a second too long, then another and another. your mother quietly noticed, the tips of her lips tilting upwards, you glanced at your mom, you coughed awkwardly and looked away.
kun was already looking in your direction, his gaze met yours from across the room, steady. unmoving and for the briefest moment, the noise around you seemed to disappear.
leaving only the strange reality that somehow, against all odds, the man waiting at the altar was the same man who had offered you a marriage contract over hospital coffee.
your mother squeezed your hand gently, you blinked and returned to reality “ready?” she whispered, you looked at her, then at the aisle and then at kun. your heart fluttered nervously.
“not at all.” your mother laughed softly. you let out a breathless laugh, then, as the music swelled and every guest turned toward you, you took your first step forward, toward the altar toward qian kun, toward a future neither of you had expected.
the ceremony itself passed in a blur, you remembered walking down the aisle. you remembered your mother wiping away tears. you remembered shuhua crying harder than anyone else in the room and you remembered xinyu finally putting her phone away.
most importantly, you remembered standing beside qian kun, the vows were exchanged, the rings followed, promises were made and before you knew it, the priest was smiling warmly at the two of you.
"you may now kiss the bride."
your soul immediately left your body. what? your eyes widened slightly, nobody had prepared you for this part. you looked at kun, he looked at you the venue suddenly felt very quiet, very, very quiet.
you could feel dozens of eyes staring at the two of you, waiting and expecting. your brain stopped functioning.
oh my god.
kun seemed to notice your panic immediately, his gaze softened slightly then, without a word, he leaned forward, your breath caught. his hand lifted instead of touching your face, his thumb gently rested against your lips.
for a split second, you looked at him in confusion then—he leaned down and pressed a kiss against his own thumb, a simple gesture it was brief, careful enough to satisfy the ceremony, enough to avoid making you uncomfortable.
the guests immediately erupted into applause, cheers echoed throughout the venue, your mother looked relieved,,shuhua was openly sobbing, and xinyu was staring intently.
you, meanwhile, stared at kun, he pulled back as if nothing unusual had happened, completely calm, completely composed as always.
only then did he lean slightly closer and murmur so only you could hear, "you're welcome." your eye twitched and just like that, the first few seconds of your marriage began with you wanting to smack your husband.
a few days earlier, while wedding preparations were taking over every hour of the day, qian kun was nowhere near his office instead, he was standing outside a police station with sicheng beside him.
when he had told you he would clear your name, he hadn't said it to comfort you, he meant it, every word. the moment he made that promise, he had already begun moving pieces behind the scenes.
the glass doors of the police station opened as kun stepped inside, a senior detective immediately stood from his chair upon seeing him. “ah! ceo qian.” the detective approached with a smile, extending his hand. “you didn't have to come here personally. i would've come to you.”
kun shook his hand politely, “it was an important matter.” his voice remained calm. “i had to visit myself.” the detective chuckled, “still the same as ever.” his expression softened slightly.
“ceo qian, ever since you saved my life, i've been indebted to you.” kun simply smiled and gave a small nod. he never liked discussing that incident. once the pleasantries ended, kun got straight to the point.
“did you look into the substance?” the detective's smile disappeared immediately, business, he understood.
“we did.” he motioned for them to enter his office, files were already spread across the desk. the detective opened one and slid several documents toward kun, “the substance found in the reports is unusual.” kun lowered his gaze to the papers “unusual how?”
“the chemical structure doesn't fully match any common performance-enhancing drug we've encountered before.” the detective rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
“it's similar to substances we've investigated in previous cases, but not identical.” kun's eyes narrowed slightly. “source?”
“that's the interesting part.” the detective pointed toward another report, “our primary findings suggest it may have been smuggled through south korea.”
sicheng, who had remained silent until now, finally looked up, “smuggled?”
“yes.” the detective nodded, “there have been several investigations involving similar substances over the past few years.” he flipped through another page.
“but this is different.” kun remained silent, allowing him to continue, the detective leaned back in his chair. “there have been similar uses before.” his expression grew serious.
“but this is an entirely new type of drug.” the room fell quiet, kun's gaze remained fixed on the documents, carefully, methodically “and you're certain it wasn't obtained locally?”
the detective shook his head, “nothing points toward a domestic source so far, which means someone intentionally acquired it.”
“that's our current theory.”
sicheng folded his arms “and somehow it ended up connected to zheng y/n.” the detective nodded grimly, “exactly.” for a moment, nobody spoke then kun closed the file, slowly. his expression revealed almost nothing but the detective had known him long enough to recognize that look.
someone had framed you and qian kun had just become very interested in finding out who and somewhere out there, the person responsible was probably living their life as if nothing had happened, kun's jaw tightened ever so slightly.
because qian kun had already made up his mind, whoever had framed you, whoever had taken away your career, whoever had caused you months of pain–he would find them and when he did, he intended to make sure they paid for every single thing they had done.
I don't know what to say... Wow... Thank you so, so much for following me and liking what I write! I'm the first person to think I write utter garbage, but I'm so glad I have people who like said garbage! 😹🩷
I don't put nearly as much effort into my fics as I do into the book I'm writing, so I apologize if that shows sometimes. I should probably draft my fanfics too, because right now I basically just give you the "skeleton" of the story. But if I start doing that... chapters will probably take twice as long -if not three times as long- to come out. 😹
But thank you a million times for sticking around despite my lack of updates and my tendency to think everything I write is terrible. 😹
I'm always happy, even with just 1 like. But I'll forever be grateful to everyone who interacts with me, whether it's through likes, comments, asks, or DMs.
To that one sweet baby who sends me asks just to hype me up~ And to my little honeybee who sends me DMs to make sure I'm okay and tells me she misses my writing~ Thank you. Truly. 🩷
I might not interact that much with everyone, but some of you I genuinely consider friends. And I hope you know you have a special place in my heart. 🩷🩷
Thank you, truly. Writing is one of my favorite hobbies, right alongside gaming, and I don't think I'll ever be able to say thank you enough.
And remember: you are loved, you are enough, and you matter.
Hendery’s phone buzzes in his back pocket as he turns his keys in the lock. He shoulders off his backpack and tosses it to the floor before throwing himself on the worn couch. His linguistics readings are the last of his worries, checking his phone is first. He pops an edible into his mouth from its package on the coffee table. Hendery smiles to himself, already knowing what the notification is. He changed the notification tone for Hinge soon after downloading the app. Ten called him weird, but Hendery likes the dopamine rush that hits every time he hears that sound. Ten called him weird again – but who cares, it makes Hendery happy.
Bella: i like talking 2 u
Bella: i wanna hear ur voice, call me 555-555-5555
Hendery swears that if he weren’t already sitting down, he’d fall to his knees. Xiaojun and Yangyang would probably call him a simp for that. But again, who cares? One of the most beautiful girls he’s ever seen wants to hear Hendery’s voice. He copies and pastes the number into the phone app, takes a deep breath, and hits call. He counts two rings before the person on the other end picks up.
“Hello, you’ve reached the Goddess Hotline. How may I serve you today?” A peppy, sickeningly sweet voice asks.
For a heartbeat, Hendery is too stunned to do anything. Too confused and taken aback. That is, until, he figures it’s some sort of joke.
“Y’know, you’re quite cocky to refer to yourself as a Goddess, Bella. Luckily, I agree that you’re one. A Goddess, that is,” Hendery is choosing to ignore the blaring sirens in his brain that call him cringe.
There’s a pause on the other line, and Hendery hears some shuffling sounds. “Sir. I really am a Goddess, and my name is not Bella,” this voice is definitely coming from the same person, but the tone is drastically different. Earlier, the voice sounded like it came from one of those talking dolls. Now, it sounds indifferent, not as rehearsed.
Hendery stands up from the couch and clears his throat. “This isn’t Bella? I guess she sent me the wrong number…” His voice grows quiet and trails off at the end.
“Sir, I am not sure what you mean. This is a secure phone number that is never called by mistake. The All Mighty One forbids it. Now, how can I serve you today?” the sweet, doll-like voice returns in the last sentence.
“What- no- I don-” then realization hits Hendery like a ton of bricks. “Oh,” the vowel lazily extended. “I put that I like pranks on my profile. I can’t lie, you really got me Bella.” A breathy laugh escapes from his mouth as he mentally admonishes himself for being so clueless.
The voice – the unrehearsed one – returns again. “Hold on sir, I’ll be there in just a moment. If you could place your phone face up on the ground, that would be greatly appreciated.” Hendery hears the other line hang up and looks down at his phone in utter confusion.
Suddenly, his phone emits a bright white light, almost as if he were staring straight into the headlights of those obnoxious trucks on the highway. Hendery’s phone plummets to the ground from his hand as he drops to his knees and shields his eyes. Wind blows through his hair – did he leave his window open? – and the sound of violent waves crashing on the beach reach his ears. And in an instant, it’s all gone. Everything stops. Hendery cautiously moves his arms away from his head at the exact moment he hears a voice. The voice. The one on the phone.
You rub your forehead with your free hand, a small wand in the other. “Fuck! I thought I told you to leave your phone face up?” Your voice is startingly loud in the small apartment, and you clear your throat in some sort of half-assed apology.
Crouching in front of you is presumably Hendery, the guy who called the Goddess Hotline. You can’t help but find him adorable, all stunned and cowering in your glory. Hendery looks back and forth between you and a package on the table.
“… what the fuck was in that gummy?” Hendery murmurs to himself.
“Oh, cute and dumb. Well, let's get this over with.” Crossing your arms, you look around the room. It’s not often that you come to earth. Hell, you can’t even remember the last time you left your tiny cubicle in the Heavenly Office. Unsurprisingly, there’s not much going on in this shoebox of a studio apartment. Leaving the man on the ground, you step around him in hopes of finding something interesting. The blinds are drawn, but you notice thin lines of light peeking through. You know enough about human life to understand what a window is, but standing in front of the thing, you have absolutely no idea how it operates. After studying it for a moment, you shrug and turn around. “How do I see outside? It’s been so long since I’ve been on earth.” After getting no response for a moment, you kneel down and wave a hand in front of the man, trying to break him out of his stupor.
Finally, he blinks rapidly and jolts up. “I heard that!” Hendery’s index finger is pointed directly at you on the ground.
You don’t move, hoping he’ll realize his mistake and offer you a hand up. “Pardon me?”
“I heard what you said! You called me dumb!” He, apparently, does not realize his mistake. Instead, you raise yourself up and roll your eyes.
“Yeah, you were supposed to hear that,” crossing your arms, you smirk. “Since you called the hotline, you must be needing some sort of emergency help. As I said earlier, the All Mighty One – or I suppose you know Them better as the universe – forbids this number from ever being called. Unless, of course, it’s part of Their plan.” You start to nonchalantly play with your finger nails, an old habit you’ve tried to drop many times. “Now, I can grant you one wish, but only one. So choose wisely.”
“Riiiiight, So if I wished for Bella right now, you could actually, like, make her appear? Like magic?”
It’s clear to you that Hendery still thinks this is some sort of bizarre weed-induced hallucination. “Excuse me?”
Hendery continues, “Well, I called Bella’s phone number, but you showed up instead. She obviously gave me the wrong number. So if I actually get a wish, I could wish for her to be here.” His jaw went slack as he rolls his eyes, head nodding as he raises his hands to his sides as if to say ‘duh?’.
It dawns on you what is happening. “Oh, I see. You were.. whats the word again? Cat-punked? Like, false profile and fake girl?” You struggle to find the slang that you’ve seen while studying human culture.
Luckily, Hendery knows exactly what word you are searching for. "No, I wasn’t catfished like you are suggesting.” He decides to copy your stance – crossed arms, smirk, and all.
You mentally chide yourself for forgetting the word. “Yes, right, well. You were obviously catfished. Perhaps someone,” you hold up two fingers from each hand, “’gave you the wrong number,’” fingers bouncing to signal air quotes. “But even then, it was the universe that made the person send you the exact number you called. Like, the Goddess Hotline is literally unreachable unless the All Mighty One wills it to happen.”
He once again stands there, staring at the package on the table. “This must be a new strain or something…” he trails off and rubs his chin thoughtfully.
At this point, you're annoyed. While you appreciate the chance to escape the corporate hell that is your Heavenly Office, this man is getting on your nerves. You sigh, “look, are you going to make a wish or not?”
Hendery’s head perks up at this. “You said I can wish for anything?”
“Yeah, pretty much.” You can practically hear the cogs spinning in his head. They must be rusty and covered in cobwebs. Or perhaps you're out of touch, as it takes a bit of effort to hear his thoughts.
Hendery rubs his chin again, it would be so fucking lit to have a smoking hot bitch to fuck right now – I wonder what Bella is up to…
“Hendery, she’s not real. You were catfished. Now make a wish,” you huff out.
Hendery’s eyes go wide and he stares down at his hands, turning them over in front of his face. They aren’t red or green or any different than they were a few minutes ago. In fact, Hendery barely felt high at all – I didn’t think I could get so high that I think I’m thinking but I’m actually speaking. I thought that only happened in movies.
You turn to your nails again. “No. I can read minds. So try to not objectify women?”
“Oh, sorry,” he says sarcastically. “I’m a 21-year-old virgin. It’s literally all I can think about.”
You're grossed out, but also weirdly intrigued. He didn’t seem to be put off by the whole mind-reading thing. In times past, you had explained it so many times that you created an unofficial script. “Literally?”
“Well. No. But yeah.” It takes one peek into Hendery’s mind to confirm that its true. Having sex is pretty much all he can think about.
“If you’re going to make a wish about a woman, please don’t be perverted or weird. While I technically can’t stop you from wishing for anything, don’t waste your wish and just ask them on a date or something.” You're starting to feel exasperated. Especially when you can tell his thoughts start to turn towards you. And, unfortunately, you can’t decide whether or not you like the attention.
Hendery’s whole body perks up as he smiles, “okay! I know. I wish that I-”
You interrupt him before he continues, “woah woah woah there big guy. You have to sign this mandatory contract first.” You tap your wand, making a pen and thick paper appear midair. They float in front of the man as if they were held aloft by invisible strings. He can’t stop himself from glancing at the ceiling to check, just in case.
Hendery’s eyes glaze over, and you tap into his thoughts. Blah blah blah the Goddess is not held accountable if the outcome is not what you want blah blah you can’t wish death upon anyone something something under no circumstances… It’s at this point that he notices your writing at the bottom of the page. Hendery reads your name from the contract and repeats it aloud, testing the way that the syllables feel in his mouth. “That’s your name?”
You’d be lying to yourself if you said it didn’t affect you. It had been decades since someone said your name aloud. And to hear it from a handsome, albeit weird, guy? Something in your abdomen tickles. But you keep your face relaxed and try to keep your voice flat. “Yeah, and?”
“Nothing, I guess.” Hendery signs his name.
“Okay, wish away.”
Hendery smiles big, “I wish for you to stay with me for as long as it takes for you to have sex with me and fall in love with me.”
Your neutral smile falters. “See, that’s actually two wishes.” You start pulling at straws. “Are you hungry? I think edibles make people hungry, right?”
The dopey smile doesn’t leave his face. “Not hungry.”
“What about a nice glass of water, isn’t your mouth dry?”
You didn’t think it was possible, but his smile grows larger as his teeth make an appearance. “I wish for you to stay by my side for as long as it takes for you to genuinely fall in love with me. Because if you’re in love with me, then we can have infinite sex!”
Your face drops. “Fuuuuu-”
And as magically as they appeared, the pen and paper vanish from the air. Hendery’s phone emits the same bright light as strong winds whip around the room, forcing you to fall forward. And, of course, you fall straight into the man who wished for you to stay and fall in love with him.
