In my Budget debate speech, I mentioned how MCCY will support the arts and cultural sector during COVID-19 and prepare them for the post-disease recovery. The arts and culture have the power to uplift our spirits and give us strength. While we want cultural performances to continue with the necessary precautions in place, we are also mindful of how COVID-19 has affected the sector. So from now until 30 June, arts and culture activities at our national cultural institutions will receive a 30% subsidy to help cover venue rental and associated costs. At the same time, we hope arts and cultural practitioners will take this opportunity to grow their capabilities for the longer-term. MCCY and the National Arts Council (NAC) will provide a one-time enhanced Capability Development Grant, which NAC’s Major Companies, Seed Grant Companies, as well as arts organisations and individuals are welcome to apply for from 16 March onwards. There are also other measures to help those impacted by COVID-19, including those announced by DPM Heng at Budget 2020. I encourage all arts and cultural freelancers to tap upon them, so we can overcome these challenging times together and emerge even stronger.
