#365daysofbiking What lies beneath:
July 7th - It was indeed a better day. The sun was out, the wind had subsided as had the discomfort in my stomach.
I headed out on the canal to Wolverhampton, taking a slow but enjoyable potter down the mainline canal to Birmingham. From there to Aston, where I left the canal and got on a train back to Shenstone. I noted the Dudley Tourist Board had been working hard to improve it’s customer service at Coseley Tunnel, where I doubt I’ll ever negotiate the southern portal steps with a bike again, although it was certainly an adventure.
Calling at the heavily secured, ghostly Rattlechain Pool, the lagoon concealing many thousands of tonnes of the worst toxic waste was a strange experience: It looks so serene and peaceful, yet the pool - itself just a cap to the material beneath, separated by a thick impermeable skin - is securely fenced and covered by many cameras.
It’s a ghostly and controversial place.
Under the M5 viaduct and Telford’s magnificent Engine Arm aqueduct, the canal is a peaceful, gentle and serene refuge from the mad urbanity above, and the street art is, as ever, fascinating.
Passing on the canal down the Snow Hill flight, I see the view is a matter of opinion. But why? What’s that all about?
A great restorative ride.

New World Rising
I claim ELO proudly as a Wulfrunian band, but they're really a Brummie troupe. Kelly Groucutt, a huge contributor to the infamous Out of the Blue, was born in Coseley but at the time that was simply a small village in Staffordshire. Unfortunately he's shamefully left out of the band nowadays.
We all know 'Blue for the anthem of positivity Mr Blue Sky. ELO's earlier works are just as impressive however, and it's the band's third album, On the Third Day, I want to talk about today. At the time frontrunner Jeff Lynne wanted desperately to be in the Beatles and the band's influence on ELO is seen no more than in this album. While at the time the band were slated as being Beatles clones, it's nice to have some Beatles-esque music from time to time. Indeed were it up to Harrison, Jeff Lynne might well have replaced John Lennon following his death!
The main single from the record is Showdown, which would sit well alongside other songs on a best-of - indeed Lynne has re-recorded it recently in order to keep the rights to the song following the various breakups of the band over the years.
With a running theme and motifs throughout the album, a typically ELO instrumental track, a cracking single and some very Beatles-esque sounds 'Third Day is as ELO as they come. My favourite is a set of three songs which flow well into one another, culminating in the fantastically orchestrated New World Rising which sends chills down the spine.
We begin with Bluebird is Dead, a track that could have been lifted straight from Abbey Road.
Flowing straight into Oh No Not Susan and again, I cannot help but hear the fab four right from the opening lyrics.
Finally the track that brings it all together and gives me chills is New World Rising, which finishes the piece.
The instrumental motif which sounds the "birds ringing out their little tune for you" is as impactful as Starlings by Elbow, and is a fantastic little piece of orchestra.

#365daysifbiking More to it than that:
February 18th - Returning from a work trip to Stafford, I got off the train mid day at Coseley, to ride back to work. On the station platform there, there was a poster advertising cheap returns to ... Coventry.
These three pictograms are apparently what the City of Coventry has to offer.
Well, the cathedral’s in a bit of a state, can’t find the penny farthing hire and as for nude women riding horses...
Can a city sue? Asking for a friend.
