ANDY SHAUF. If Coconut Records and Elliott Smith had a baby.
I have had a few people ask me recently, "Where do you find new bands?" While I answered by rattling off a few of my favorite music blogs from around the country, I didn't mention that there is a certain level of basic "keeping your ear to the ground" involved and a dependency on supporting your local record store. Today I stopped in to my favorite local record store here in Nashville, Grimey's. They had Andy Shauf playing and for a moment I thought it was a new project by Jason Schwartzman aka Coconut Records. I browsed around and ended up picking up a re-issue of John Prine's 1971 album but by the time I left I had also ordered a copy of Andy Shauf (they were temporarily out of stock). It was like that scene in High Fidelity where John Cusack says "I will now sell five copies of 3 EPs by the Bea Band." They got me, hook, line and sinker. So I guess the moral of the story is music is everywhere, folks. Support it. Support your local record stores. Support your favorite music blogs. Support discovering new music because that's where our favorite bands come from. Your new favorite band isn't going to discover itself.
