A child she had never been able to watch grow up lay on the bed before her. Sitting on the edge, Fantine brushed hair away from Cosette's face. In God's Kingdom, she had learnt what had truly happened to her precious daughter in her absence, and it made her heart heavy. But that man, that kind man, had saved her, as he had saved Fantine herself.
"Cosette," she whispered, in a voice she had once used to wake the girl when she was a child. When she had been tiny and loved, so very loved. "Cosette, my love?"
It had been so long since she had last visited one of Cosette's dreams. Once he had taken her from the Thénardier's, Fantine didn't see a reason to keep disturbing the girl. Let her love her new Papa, and further forget the Maman who had left her behind. Left her behind, but always kept her in her heart.
