A Self-Computing Universe? Due to the universality of computation, all different kinds of architectures can facilitate computation. Therefore the computations involved in physical processes can tell us nothing about the underlying architecture of the cosmic computer. The latter thus turns out to be – speaking in a metaphysical vein – the unknowable, the transcendent as such. This inscrutability of the cosmic computer is in a sense the computational equivalent of the unknowability of God "as He exists in Himself".
