Naru-sensei is quieter than usual.
Sayuri’s the one who notices it first, as she is with most things despite Hatsumomo’s eyes and Masahiro’s in built sense of trouble and awareness of people.
It doesn’t take long for all three of them to be on the same page though.
Naru-sensei is always so bright and loving and warm with them.
But today something’s wrong.
Even though he’s still as kind and loving and attentive as always there’s something missing.
His hands keep flexing at his sides and there’s this look that flutters across his face from time to time, something that looks almost lost.
It’s like he’s there with them but not all at the same time.
Like he’s a step off to the side of their normal rhythm as a team.
It feels like a cloud has passed over the sunshine of their lives.
None of them like it and they want whatever it is that’s bothering their Naru-sensei to go away.
Masahiro’s the one who acts.
He reaches up to tighten the stubby little green ponytail he’s now sporting, nods decisively at the other two, and then takes off at a dead run towards Naru-sensei with as much speed and stealth as he can muster.
It’s something they’ve all done a thousand times since they settled into team life, since Naru-sensei took them by the hands and made them his.
They run towards Naru-sensei and he always, always, catches them.
Grabs them in a hug or by their hands to toss up into the sky, clones popping into existence to guide them safely back down to the ground, cushioning falls and teaching them how to roll.
In a hundred different ways and even if it’s all three of them at once, Naru-sensei always catches them all.
Masahiro gets within touching distance and instead of whirling around and scooping him up like he always does Naru-sensei flinches.
He ducks down and away right before Masahiro’s hand can latch onto the trailing sleeve of his kimono.
Masahiro, startled and thrown, doesn’t remember to slow his momentum.
For the first time since this all began Naru-sensei doesn’t catch him.
He hits the ground and rolls for a few seconds, coming to a stop a few feet beyond where Naru-sensei had been standing.
He’s not hurt, isn’t even really scratched or bruised at all.
But for some reason, sitting on the ground completely unhurt but staring up at Naru-sensei who’s whirled around, something like horror on his face, Masahiro can’t help the way tears spring up, hot and wet, in the corners of his eyes.
Across from him Sayuri and Hastumomo don’t look much better, reflexive, sympathetic tears welling up in their eyes too, proof in a odd sort of way as to just how close Naru-sensei has brought them all together.
Naru-sensei is there in the next second, clawed hands fluttering across his face as gentle as a breeze before he cups one hand around the back of Masahiro’s head and pulls him against his chest.
“Hiro-chan,” Naru-sensei breathes, “I’m so sorry.”
Masahiro, face pressed against the silk of Naru-sensei’s kimono, his heart thudding fast and strong beneath his ear, breathes in the scent of salt, sun, and deep forest, and feels his shoulders shake.
“Come here you two,” Naru-sensei says above him, and it only takes a split second before Sayuri and Hatsumomo crash into Naru-sensei’s other side and all three of them are curled up together safe in his arms.
Pressed as tightly against him as they can be, sheltered in his embrace like he’s the only safe place they know.
And, in so many ways, he is.
“Sensei?” Hatsumomo’s voice, normally so biting, is small.
It’s easy to hear the question she’s really asking without her having to say the words.
Why? What’s wrong? What do we do?
“I …” Naru-sensei pauses, sighs, squeezes his arms around them gently as he breathes in deeply, and then continues, “I have … bad days. Sometimes. Not as many as I did when I was little like you are but they do still happen.”
Sayuri goes absolutely still.
“It’s not battle fatigue like they taught in the Academy,” Naru-sensei tells them. “My bad days … I’ve always had them, even before I joined the Academy. And I never … no one was ever … I used to hide out in my apartment when they happened, or get in trouble on purpose so I’d be sent out in the hall if I couldn’t skip class, things like that. Either way I’d spend them alone. Until now.”
Hatsumomo shivers just a bit, a small tremor running jaggedly down her spine.
Even without speaking Sayuri and Masahiro both know they feel the same way she does.
Upset and just a bit overwhelmed.
Upset about what Naru-sensei is and isn’t saying, about the implications of bad days and spending the alone. About the way he seems so accepting of both of those facts. About the way he’d flinched and all of the things that could mean.
Overwhelmed by the fact that Naru-sensei came to them anyways, stayed with them anyways, despite being their sensei and more than able to cancel training for the day.
“You came today,” Saryuri whispers the question on all three of their minds.
“Of course I did,” Naru-sensei huffs out a small laugh, “I have you three now and you, this team, it’s the most important thing in my life. You’re my most precious of people. I don’t want my bad days or anything else to get in the way of that.”
He says it simply, easily, like it’s a undeniable truth: Naru-sensei has bad days but bad days won’t stop him from being there with, or for, them.
And, pressed against his chest, listening to his heartbeat and the soothing rumbling purr like sound that he always uses to relax them, all they can do is believe him.
And believe in him.
Just like always.
But that doesn’t stop them from getting together in private later on and planning just what to do if/when Naru-sensei has another bad day.
Because he might be there for them but they’re also determined to be there for him in return.
Because they’re a team and, just like Naru-sensei had said that first day, that means they’re family now.
They’re going to show Naru-sensei that he never has to spend another bad day alone as long as the three of them are around.
u have no idea how much i love ur 72 snufkin. ive been going through and watching new moomin and hes so needlessly ominous all the time but so weirdly sweet to moomin while occasionally stalking him from the bushes. its great and ur snufkin portrays that perfectly
AAAAAAHH THIS IS SO NICE!!!! i’m screaming!! thank you so much this really means a lot! i really wanted to make sure i gave him that vibe of.... mystery... but also chaos.... he’s such a weirdo i’m so glad i’m able to do him justice it’s what he deserves
Both the Sylph of Lifeand the Mage of Void really want those cool machines that carbonate anybeverage for you, but for entirely different purposes. Your Sylph wants to makecool new drinks, or just really likes sparkling mineral water. You know, normalthings one would do with a soda maker. On the other hand, your Mage of Void knowsyou can make some horrible combinations and really wants to make the worstdrinks imaginable. Anyone want a tall glass of fizzy gravy? Or maybe a horseradish-infusedseltzer? Surprisingly, your Sylph finds the Mage’s antics hilarious, and onlyever objects when the Void player wants to add something toxic to the mix. Andyes, sometimes the Mage of Void just wants something palatable that the Sylphbrewed up. Honestly they’re having way too much fun with this.
If your Mage of Void isa connoisseur of video games, as in they play the save five games over and overagain, they’ll eventually find a lot of mistakes or hidden things from the gamedevelopers, stuff that even the internet hasn’t found yet. Of course, the Mageloves showing off to the Sylph, because let’s be real, finding this stuff ispretty cool. Your Life player might not see the appeal of finding these loosethreads, whether they’re a gamer or not, but they’re always happy for the Mageand their accomplishments. Though after a while, the Sylph of Life might joinin and help their palemate scour areas for potential glitches. Sure you mightwalk in on the Mage cheering loudly, “Nice, going into this unfinished roommakes your arms go missing!” but try not to get too worried about them.
Seeing that the Mage ofVoid probably spends more time indoors than what’s considered healthy, theSylph of Life likes giving them a bit of greenery to make their bedroom a littlemore oxygenated. Though knowing the Void player, it has to either be those plantsthat flourish well in the dark, or some sort of carnivorous specimen. We alllove a good Venus flytrap, after all, but a good carnivorous bromeliad or somebutterwort can work nicely too. The cutest part is when the Mage shows all thegreat things they’ve been doing for their plant gifts, such as giving them bettersoil and some of the carbonated water they have. It’s not to show off theirskills, but a way to show how much they appreciate these tokens from their belovedmoirail. And yes, the Mage of Void gets the Sylph plants as gifts too, but they’reusually just really dark-colored flowers because, “You deserve a goth garden.”
imagine werewolf!virgil making boof noises and little barks and whines in his sleep as a human
he wakes up to find his three humans all staring at him and when he starts to panic they have to explain that he was half mumbling incoherent words and half making wolf sounds in his sleep. roman describes it as something like
“mmrrhnh there’s feet in the river. hhff. mhm. won’t find. hrrgrrrr… ‘ll howl dont test me. *full body twitch* potatoes?”
sometimes i read fics w plots like "oh no this transparent plot device has made them revert to their primal instincts!!!! who knows what kind of sexual or violent things theyll do" and i immediately think about how my instincts exclusively involve the desire to vigorously rub my face against the people i like and to hide in soft dark places and make chirpy noises to myself. imagine smth like that happening to virgil in the alien au and the crew reacting
i see your wibar virgil and raise you heyatn werewolf virgil, who gets dosed with a spell (transparent plot device) that increases base instincts and clouds the mind, and everyones like “oh no virgil!” because drugging a huge ass wolf is a terrible idea in any situation, but virgil’s base instincts boil down to “protect pack” and “cuddles” so he spends the entirety of the spell just herding his humans like a frantic sheepdog until they give up on doing anything for the day and let him sprawl out in their laps happily. he is SOOO embarrassed when he snaps out of it, but patton is just like “gee if you wanted to cuddle more often, you shouldve just asked!”
