Parallel Persian Paths: GIVECHI Meets GIVECHI on IG - but that’s not all!!! -Yasi and I met on IG by accident over a year ago-ish. I think I saw her name on a comment, and noticed her/my last name. This is rare! So I reached out, and we swapped facts with our parents and concluded that we were actually NOT related. Weird!! Again- not a common last name. But we started to follow each other on IG. Casual curiosity... Cut to the next scene and I happen to notice she’s in NYC, so I reach out last Sunday to see if she wanted to grab coffee. We meet for a drink the next night- her last night in NYC - and here is what we discovered... We were both born in the States. // We both lived in the Bay Area in our high school years. (She actually was there most of her life, whereas I bounced around the globe.) // We both went to UC Davis for our undergrad years. // We both studied in Italy for one year — me in Florence to study printmaking at Il Bisonte. She switched from a path heading towards dentistry and got a Masters in Interaction Design at Domus in Milan. // Though my MFA from Art Center was in Graphic Design/New Media (before interaction was a formal track), I was hired at IDEO back in the day as an interaction designer. // I worked in SF for many years. She currently is. // I’m loving living in NY. She noted that she feels at home here whenever she visits... // We acknowledged how often people inadvertently insert the letter N into our last name... making GiveNchi seem a hair closer to Givenchy... though we aren’t related to them either. // And for the oddest discovery, we both begrudgingly shift other people’s crap in our buildings if they place paper in the plastic bin or vice versa, bc we are secret recycling nerds. // We’re 20 years apart... I know many give social media the dirty eye, but between keeping in touch with friends and family in a lazy cursory way (which suits me), or in this case, being reminded that life is crazy beautiful - I am grateful.
