Sailor Moon Shining Theater Shinagawa Tokyo Fuku Fabric Sourcing Post
Howdy, fellow cosplayers and fellow senshi fuku aficionado~! These are educated guesses myself and my friend @/sailormoonturtle (IG & Tiktok) have come to. Several other moonies who have made stage accurate fuku have also weighed in to agree or add to the list. So, expect the thread to be adjusted as time goes on.
I am also including budget fabrics I think are very close as well, long post under the cut!
Skirts & Collars:
Stage Accurate Guess: Crista's Marble Span mixed sequin tulle with either liquid or crystal organza on top
Budget Suggestion: transparent mixed sequin on tulle or bead & sequin tulle on top of this irregular hard mesh fabric. There is also this irridescent mesh in virtually all the senshi's colors.
Either option would need a satin or similar lining to help build opacity.
Bows:
Stage Accurate Guess: Crista's Glare Organdy
Budget Suggestion: Shiny Crinkle Crepe or Glossy Satin Crepe or Silver striped crepe
Either would be the fashion layer, and I would personally suggest a sew in heavy duty pellon or even a 2mm foam to support the weight and remain perky.
Bodice, Gloves, & Chokers:
Stage Accurate Guess: Crista's Misty Sand
Calling the following budget suggestions sounds a bit removed from reality lol. I would look at mystique spandex from spandex world, blue moon, or the like.
The caveat here is you would want to look into two way stretch fabrics for lining (maybe a thin spacer or similar) as it needs to be load bearing to support the weight of the skirt and bows.
Super Moon & Chibi Usa Belts:
Stage Accurate Guess: Crista's High Metallic
Other Suggestion: Blue Moons Sparkle Foiled Spandex in Gold or Sunshine
Collar Trims:
Stage Accurate Guess: Jury is out on if there is an ab finish on the senshi's rhinestone banding, but there is the regular banding or the ab banding on crista. The moons however have a gold toned metal rhinestone banding, not found on Crista.
I've yet to find the same pleated ruffle trim on Crista so I' not sure where that came from.
Budget Suggestions: regular rhinestone banding, ruffle trim A & ruffle trim B. You would need to dye the missing colors or make your own with a soft tulle in the right shade.
Tiara Trims:
Stage Accurate Guess: N/A
Budget Suggestions: center rhinestone banding, border gimp trim, sew on rhinestones .
You can't really see the base it's built onto so I would say dealers choice. Again some stiff pellon 70p would be great, fosshape if you had any leftover, I've seen cracked ice fabric or even glitter htv on foam. Lots of great options, it's hard to go wrong!
Brooches:
The hunt for an exact 1:1 match of these brooches has been a long and sordid one. I've been looking at resin molds, food molds, paper craft, several friends have suggested acrylic ornaments that have been halved or paper weights. Currently I suspect they may be vacuum formed with a custom bezel, though the bezels do remind me of the candyone brooch & bezel combos from earlier myus.
Have I found a few close options? Yes, currently the closest match I have seen is a paper craft though it's missing a few facets. If anyone has any leads and would like to weigh in, it would be appreciated!
For non stage accurate, this diamond heart box mold would be excellent for making hollow halves. The scale I think it's also very close, though you would still need to figure out the bezel situation.
Why Crista's? The fabrics for the Super Live Fuku & Queen Beryl were also sourced from them so it stands to reason these very similar looking fabrics are likely what they used. Though again it's just speculative. (photos were scaled up from the original cast photo page)
While the webpages to Crista's I've linked are on their JP site, they do have an international sister site. Though the pricing is higher and I personally have yet to order from them. It may be more cost effective to split orders with friends if you are considering ordering via proxy etc.
Apart from that, I also caught some interesting construction details in the video teaser they released a few weeks back. It looks like the super sleeves and skirts? attach with snaps this time around! The bows also seem to snap onto the fuku via the v waistband. We're hoping this means there is a chance for an on stage power up/henshin scene but time will tell!
I have emerged from my cave to give you all a costume breakdown of Gerard Way's cheerleader outfit from the MCR reunion tour! I hope this post is of help to those who might want to recreate the costume for themselves or for the MCR fans who just want to know more about this costume. If anyone has any additional information, please feel free to leave it in a comment or a reblog or a message!
FIRSTLY, we will go over the information that we know about this costume from the designer, Marina Toybina.
The dress was found vintage, then reconstructed to fit Gerard Way (I saw in the Strange Aeons MCR video that it was originally a size 4, but I haven't found anything that says that but I could be missing something). Now, because of the wording of 'reconstructed', I am a little unsure if they took it apart and made a pattern to then make to Gerard's size, or if they sized it up by adding fabric. However, due to the lack of visible seams, I'm more inclined to believe that the original was taken apart to make a pattern, and Gerard's dress was made to look vintage.
The OG dress had no zipper and the hem was nonexistent. However, because of comments that it was the 'perfect base', this does not remove the possibility of Gerard's dress having a zipper.
NOW, onto some ANALYSIS!
TOP
The dress is one piece, with there being no separate top and bottom.
The sleeves are not fitted at the wrist, but they are gathered along the top, and only along the top, because past the shoulder the sleeve looks smooth.
There is a seam along the top, connecting the white to the green. There is also no darts in the white section of the top. Also in this picture, the 'W' looks like an applique?? I forgot about the applique oops. It is also worth noting that the collar is not tight fitting, and isn't very tall, maybe two inches AT THE MOST, most likely an inch and a half based off of my estimates.
AND NOW, THE SKIRT
The skirt has front-side seams!
This skirt is box pleated. Now, I can't see the box pleats stitched down, so there might be some serious skirt-cutting wizardry going on here, or the stitching is too small to see.
Now, as for number of pleats, here is my estimated pleat configuration. We have two front pleats (see image above), two side pleats, and presumably two pleats in the back (I could not find any back views of the dress). Below is an image of the front and side pleats, numbered for your viewing pleasure.
