So, I need your opinion. I'm Nonbinary, and am they/them and he/him, and I chose the name Lance. Now, this decision was helped by the new Voltron show that came out, but I didn't choose it because I wanted to be the character, but because it felt like it fit me and made sense. But, I'm afraid that whenever I say it, people are just gonna think that I wanted to be like my favorite character. I was wondering if I should maybe change it?
Keep your name! You will meet lots of people (like me) who’ve never seen the Voltron show, and who won’t associate the name Lance with that at all, and you’ll meet lots of people who’ll assume it’s a coincidence. Like, if you introduce yourself to strangers as Lance, lots of people will assume it’s your birth name simply because you didn’t give them an alternative, so you’re likely to get a lot of, “Lance? Like the Voltron character? That’s so cool!” and not a lot of “Did you name yourself after your favorite character?”
There’s also no shame in naming yourself after a character. We actually get asks like this a lot, and the answer is always that you should have a name you love, regardless of where it comes from.
