Isolation Creations: An Ancient Cosmetic Jar
Happy Monday, everyone! This week's #IsolationCreations prompt is this small blue cosmetic jar from the Ancient Near East that dates back to 1650–1550 BC. Cosmetics and toiletries were highly valued in many ancient societies, with both men and women wearing eye make up and perfume, and even using various forms of hair dye. In ancient Egypt, where this object likely comes from, the two main forms of make up were eye paint and kohl, made from malachite and a mix of galena and charcoal respectively. These were used for 'self-improvement', as well as protection from disease, insects and even the harsh rays of the sun. What does this object inspire you to create? Perhaps a new bug-proof make up look? Share your work with us by tagging @AshmoleanMuseum and using the #IsolationCreations hashtag.
