I decided to join in on #modernlessmarch so I'm playing catch up. Modernless March is hosted by @pinsent_tailoring . Day 1 is "Who are you?" My name is Amy, and I am the Swimmer in the Sea of Estrogen. I started a blog when I was a single mom to three young girls – thus the Sea of Estrogen. I have been sewing more than 40 years – starting when I was really young (probably 4-5) – do the math, I’m OLD. I started by sitting on my mom’s lap and running the fabric while she ran the foot pedal on her machine. My mom was my main sewing teacher, and she eventually became my 4-H leader, as well. I sewed and competed in 4-H all through junior high, and I really enjoyed it. I didn’t sew much in high school or early college, but after my first daughter was born, I started sewing again. I didn’t venture beyond basic Halloween costumes and blankets, and I sewed periodically while all three of my girls were young. Life, divorce, finishing my college degree, etc., took over, and I didn’t sew for a lot of years. About 8 years ago, I met this really cute dude. We actually attended high school together. He was really outgoing, and we didn’t really run in the same circles. It turns out the really cute dude is a huge nerd and belonged to a LARP group. He asked me to go once, and if I hated it, he would never ask again. I agreed and had to make a costume for the weekend. Spoiler alert – it’s a lot of fun beating the crap out of people with foam swords twice a year. I started sewing again. I started out just making simple costumes and the occasional patchwork quilt, but then I found the online PDF Pattern community, and I fell in love with sewing my own clothes. I began pattern testing and became more involved in several PDF pattern groups.
