Day 24: Favorite Wig You Have Done We'll go with the definition of "favorite" as "wig you're most proud of having made" and not "most fun to wear," as T'Pring's wig weighed 2.4 pounds and was an absolute monster. It also made riding in cars impossible. For a cosplay I had to redo/restart a part of I'll go with Super Sailor Pluto. In the first two photos, while it may not look it, almost the entire thing is held together by safety pins lmao. @raierae and I were rushing last minute and I really don't know how we managed to get the costumes on our bodies haha (she was Super Sailor Saturn). I had to fix up a lot and redo some construction (not to mention actually sewing parts together, lol) so in the bottom two photos it's actually a functioning garment lol. Day 4: most difficult cosplay to make.
My nightingale armor so far has been the most challenging.
I used a pepakura file (link can be found in my bio) and printed it out, cut out all the pieces, traced and cut out all the pieces on foam, then taped them together and then hot glued them. Then I backed everything with fabric and pva glue, did the hot glue detailing, and then sealed and finished.
There were about 114 foam pieces all together that had to be assembled. All the tracing, assembly, and finishing I did a week before a con because I hate myself 😅 because of that I barely have any progress photos whoops.
This will probably change once I finish my Arya Stark cosplay, which is more complex with all the different parts going on.
Day 20: Cosplay You've Learned The Most From This is another difficult choice, but certainly the one that took our craftsmanship techniques in a whole new direction was the Terra Cotta Warrior costume we made for @childrensmuseum, and which I wore for the exhibit opening. I'd done some small-scale moldmaking and casting before, but this was the first time I'd done a full-body suit or used silicone in this kind of quantity. It also taught me a lot about the need for building ventilation and hydration into costumes, since I could only be in the suit for about 20-30 minutes before I started to overheat... 😅 I'm the one in the middle. Day 15: Con Crunch (something you worked on up to the last minute) This is the belt I made for my Crowley (Good Omens) costume. I sculpted the snake head from wax clay the night before the convention. I made a mold, cast it in resin, and sanded it in the wee hours of the morning. Then I gave it a base coat of paint and went to bed. The next morning, I drove to the con, unpacked, gave it a second coat of paint, and got dressed. The paint was still wet when I went in for craftsmanship judging. Day 8: Details! Details! For all that Marguerite (The Scarlet Pimpernel) is a frequently-photographed costume, I have relatively few pictures showing the fine detail work! I did SO MUCH handwork on this dress: All the gold lace on the entire costume is hand-painted. All the jewels and dangly bits are sewn on by hand. The heat-set crystals were individually placed. I even made the jewelry from loose stones (as well as cannibalized hair accessories, keychains, etc.) and assembled the buttons from parts! Day 5: Prop You Are Most Proud Of This also happens to be the first prop I ever made, and I think that's probably *why* I'm so proud of it, because I had no clue what I was doing and still managed to make a rifle that looked realistic enough that it got banned from four conventions. 🤣 My Riza Hawkeye rifle (made in... 2004? ish?) was carved from insulation foam, with details made from Wonderflex (which I'd never used before), dowel rods, cough syrup measuring cups, toilet parts, Model Magic, aluminum can tabs, a purse strap, a plastic coat hook, and the rubber foot from a cane. Day 17: Tackled A New Material The first thing I ever made out of thermoplastic was the automail arm for Laura's Edward Elric costume. This was back when Wonderflex was the new hotness, but it had mesh texture on both sides, and you had to coat it in layers of wood glue or gesso and then sand it forever... 😂 Maybe around 2005 or so? Anyway, it had a really easy learning curve and I was hooked!
