This Cotinus 'Grace' (smoke tree) is being hard pruned (stooled) every winter resulting in this vigorous, strongly coloured new growth.

I love autumn. Although everything is winding down in the garden, there is still beauty, and lots of preparation to do, and hence hope, for the next year. In my garden some of that beauty is provided by this Cotinus tree. It has dark purple leaves in the late spring and summer, which turn red in the autumn. This tree is getting a bit big now and squashing other plants around it, especially a pretty rambling rose. I will give the tree a major prune in January, but am enjoying its impact now.
