Acanthaster planci, better known as the crown of thorns starfish or the COTS is large species of starfish which is native to the tropical and subtropical latitudes of the red sea, Indian ocean, and pacific ocean. Here they inhabit coral reefs and hard coral communities, where they are predators of the corals themselves as well as encrusting sessile invertebrates and carrion. These starfish feed by extruding there stomach out through the mouth over the surface, the stomach then secretes digestive enzymes that liquefy the corals soft tissues allowing the starfish to slurp up the coral. This leaves a white scar of coral skeleton devoid of living tissue. An individual crown of thorns starfish can consume up to 6 square meters (65 sq ft) of living coral reef per year. These starfish sport elongated, sharp spines which cover nearly the entire upper surface of there arms and bodies which give the creature its name and serve as a mechanical defense against predation. These spines and other tissues of the starfish contain a mix of bitter foaming saponin toxins known as asterosaponins. While A. planci has no mechanism for injecting the toxin, if attacked the spines perforate the tissue of a predator releasing said toxins. In In humans, this immediately causes a sharp, stinging pain that can last for several hours, and persistent bleeding, nausea, and tissue swelling that may last a week or more. Surprisingly there are around 11 species known to prey upon COTS including pufferfish, triggerfish, small painted shrimp, polychaete worms, a hermit crab, a sea urchin, a large polyp-like creature of the cnidarian genus Corynactis, and the tritons trumpet snail. Reaching 10 to 14 inches (25 to 35cms) across, the crown of thorns starfish sports a central disk from which radiates up to 21 arms. Although the body of the crown of thorns has a stiff appearance, it is quite soft and is able to bend and twist to fit around the contours of the corals on which it feeds. Under ideal conditions a COTS may live upwards 8 to 17 years.

My ignorant ass has got myself into a writing pickle😔 because obviously all village churches in the area I've set Clouds of the Soul are Anglican.

I deliberately haven't named the village Thomas lives in as it's a fictional Cambridgeshire village (there are plenty of them to make an amalgam), so like, I *could* say the church is Catholic but it seems a bit far-fetched... Anglo-Catholic, sure, but Roman Catholic..?

If I'd researched it beforehand, I'd have had Thomas live in Ely or St Ives or another bigger town that has a Catholic Church. But it is also important to me that Thomas has physically isolated himself location-wise to a small village...

I kind of like the idea of Thomas being raised Catholic, being Catholic his whole life, but then converting to Anglican during his struggles with his faith and health as it feels a little less suffocating. This would require Ray's encouragement and reassurance, but the whole thing also requires *Ray* to be Anglican too and urgghh. Am I really out here making high-ranking Catholics into Anglicans?

As you can tell, I don't know nearly enough about Christian faiths and I thought this AU would free me of that concern!!

I could ignore the whole thing and never mention it, but the Church of England allows for same-sex blessing ceremonies... which will be important later... (or like every other fic with a lawrenitez wedding, they just have a Catholic ceremony in secret...)

MAIN CHARACTER DESIGNS

First up we got

EVEREST!!!

Everest's shirt is a light blue you just cant really see it. They have green and blue eyes because it's a mix of their mother's green eyes and their other parental figure's blue eyes. (That's not how human genetics work but they weren't really conceived that way. Like genetics were kinda just thrown out of the mix.)

They have lots of bandages because they tend to get in a lot of fights, especially when they used to be in the orphanage. (I call them Timmy Toughknucles on the ref sheet, idk if it's visible.)

Their belt is made of tiny metal suns. Their design is based off of a sunset (thanks to @emiplayzmc for that idea). This is because their birth basically caused "the sun" (everest's mother) to "set" (die.) Also it's because sunsets are like related to the sky but not quite.

MARIN BELLAMY!!!

I'm gonna be honest with you, I don't know if Marin's hairstyle is possible. It's like, an afro, but then there are two strands in the front that are like those braids with beads at the very end. She has one large yellow flower in her hair with like ribbons coming out of the end. Her design is based off of Marionettes, as seen with the weird ruffly dress. The sleeves cinching around the elbow is supposed to show like. Elbow joints.

SEVERINE MOURNING!!!

Severine isn't colored because his outfit is literally just varying shades of black and gray and I had no light skin color. But he's...scarily pale. His cape is supposed to look like bird wings, and so it's like. A crow. He's supposed to look like a crow, because crows show death and misfortune. This man definitely has a LOT of deat hand misfortune in his life. sigh.

He has his trusty ol sword attached to his back. I'll probably add something to symbolize his daughter in his outfit later on.
