The family masks completed from my engineered #facemask pattern from Jonathan Beall’s Old Shale Face Warmer pattern. Pictures: 1) Mom wearing hers to her doctor’s appointment—she received compliments from every health professional, so my work here is done 💁🏻‍♀️ 2) Mom’s laid out, with my mother-in-law’s in grey underneath 3) my mother-in-law’s inside-out, so you can see the pocket, and 4) me wearing my Dad’s. I have decided that the best extra barrier, should one be desired, would be disposable gauze bandages, the kind you tape on a cut. Fold them up, slide them into the pocket, then throw them away when you’re home. If you don’t want to do so, there’s still two layers of thick, worsted-weight cotton there. As written, (link below) it fits my big Scottish head, and so fit my Dad. I reduced it to CO 76, removing 3 repeats of the K2P2 rib of the neck band, for my mother and my mother-in-law. First mask by request done: Dad’s in grey. (Why does my grey hair photograph so dark sometimes?) Now that the big Scottish heads are covered 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 😀, I have to either tighten the gauge or lessen the stitch count, or both, for Mom and my mother-in-law. I think I will take out two rib repeats for Mom’s and Margaret’s; I’ll keep taking copious notes, in case y’all want to make these yourselves. Dad’s has the same pick-up-and-knit inner filter and pocket of fifteen stitches with no. 5 needle. I bound off the mask with the K2tog bind off, and that seems to be stretchy enough. A healthy person should be able to crank these out quickly; I am having to stop often due to hand pain, to stretch and rest. I took a break from knitting @itswilwheaton’s Muppet hug blanket to make some masks for family from my cotton stash. I found a pattern that wouldn’t pull on ears—a face warmer that goes all the way around the neck and has a nice nose swoop —and then modified it for safety. My notes: “Made in K2 P2 instead of K1P1 rib—CO 88 instead of 90 sts. To create a safety mouth barrier: after completing, I turned inside out, picked up 15 sts with #5 at beg of mouth shale sts, knitted stockinette stitch until reaching other side of mouth shale sts, bound off, seamed to that side and to edge of ribbed sts if bottom. I left the top open in order to not distort the nose swoop and to leave this as a pouch for a filter if wished.” The original pattern is Old Shale Face Warmer by Jonathan Beall.
