Camp Memories #1

Looks over to see crying camper.

Waits a few seconds to see if anyone else is going to deal with it.

Sighs and approaches

Me: Haley? What's wrong?

Haley: I MISS MY CAAAAT! *Horrific sobs*

Me: Well your cat really wants you to have a great time at camp.

Haley: HE'S DEAAAD!

Here's a story i think about when I'm sad.  I had a camper of mine tell me she didn't believe in magic. She was 6 years old and didn't believe that fairies existed, that mermaids were real, that the tooth fairy brought you money for a lost tooth, that leprechauns were at the end of a rainbow. Nothing. Yet she had the most active imagination i have seen a kid have.             She pretended she could fly and sprinkled dirt like it was fairy dust. She gave herself money when she lost a tooth and pretended the tooth fairy did it. She swam like she was a mermaid with her legs together. She pretended to find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.             Why you may ask? "Just because my mom told me non of those things existed doesn't mean my little brother can't have a little hope"              She's 6 and shes already looking out for her family. Made my god damn day.

My summer so far

For those of y'all who don't know I'm spending my summer as a volunteer intern at a Girl Scout camp.  So yeah, I'm quite literally paid in hot dogs for the hardest job in the world.  It's my Senior project, so its also for a grade.

But if their is one thing I've learned so far it's patience.  If you don't have patience in this world you have nothing.  But on to the funny stories.

     We also had an overnight that week across the lake.  So we boated over and as we were singing our girls to sleep we heard what sounded like someone tramping through our campsite.  So our UL looked over at a tree and saw two glowing eyes staring at us and instantly went into mother bear mode.  Literally, she stomped around and yelled "Get Out" at the raccoons.  Not two minutes later, after getting the okay from our Camp Director, we started screaming out all of our frustration in the direction of the raccoons.  If you've ever wondered sound travels extreamly well across water, so we woke up everyone in camp.  Suffice it to say that we went back that night and slept in the unit.

Week 2

     This is more of a proud mommy moment than a funny story, but one of my campers passed her Red level swim test and learned to swim even though she was terrified of water.  She was 14.  We also taught her the 7 continents that week.

Showering in the Men's bathroom when the automatic lights go off is an adventure. There's nothing like crawling on the floor to find your shampoo.
