Hello, bean! Thank you so much for the ask!

Well, I actually didn't care for her that much, but I do understand her choices and her pain. I also understand why Edmond calls her marrying Fernand as 'prostitution', but I don't agree that is the right word. She was scared and lonesome - a woman with no family and no actual protection in life in the 17th century. Of course she ran into the arms of the only remaining protective figure.

Edmond is after all the product of his times, he is far above most male population of that time, but he still values things that we find today arhaic and quite sexist.

While it was unfair to Edmond - she never even mourned him properly - she was entitled to move on and he never contested that. He never expected her to mourn him forever, but his heartbreak was about not being mourned at all - she married Fernand six months after Louis died.

I found her more interesting duting the Paris part of the plot, truth be told - the reader knows she is the only one to recognize Edmond - it was bound to, it's realistic and dramatic, I love it. Her interest in Monte-Cristo's happiness was heartbreaking for me - she just wished him peace and happiness, it was genuine, not arisen from guilt. It's so hard to convey that in writing and Dumas made an excellent job.

I loved that she is presented at this graceful and intelligent woman and you can see that, she is not like the other Paris-based characters - her heart remained at sea, she is untouched by the ugliness of it all.

Although she was not part of Fernand's crimes, she and Albert had a good ending to their individual stories.

Edmond broke her heart with his revenge, and that was one of the reasons why they couldn't be together, but I think edmond, after 14 years in Chateau d'If could never be the same man who swore eternal love to her. His feelings for her were still a factor in some of his decisions as Monte-Cristo, but I doubt it was that kind of love that was once.

Extroverted Sensing (Se): Fernand is above everything else an opportunist, taking anything that comes up as a chance and acting on that chance, usually getting what he wants as a result. His fortune was made by taking the opportunity to betray Ali Pascha in the heat of battle, regardless of potential danger in doing so. He’s all impulse and desperate need when he first appears; he loves Mercedes and he wants to marry her right now, and he’s desperate to act in some way, to do something that will ensure she doesn’t marry Edmond. He doesn’t think much about the consequences of his actions; subsequently those consequences often end up biting him in the ass years later.

Introverted Thinking (Ti): Fernand generally uses logic and reasoning to try and achieve the goals he wishes. His first conversation with Mercedes has him using many different rational arguments as to why she should marry him, which don’t affect her (She’s an Fi dom) the way an emotional argument could. He’s usually interested in getting the most possible use out of anything that crosses his path; he is, as stated above, an opportunist above all, and seizes any rational chance at attaining what he wants, using things and people to get there.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe): He’s absolutely upfront with his emotions and doesn’t even bother to conceal them. He’s in love with Mercedes, he’s told her that for years; he refuses to have a certain portrait hung in the house, his feelings must be answered and it must be moved. He has no internal sense of morality in general; if he ever tailors his impulses, it’s because of the effect of other people on him, not any kind of internal moral compass (i.e., he won’t kill Edmond because Mercedes tells him not to).

Introverted Intuition (Ni): He’s persistent enough in seeking what he wants to demonstrate some Ni certainty and determination. He wants to marry Mercedes, but struggles to match her superior Ni (ISFP) in their opening debate about why she won’t marry him. He doesn’t make connections very well, being more interested in the current moment.
