1982 McDonald's Halloween ad
I miss local TV horror hosts. Back in the day, you could watch an old sci fi or horror movie hosted by a colorful and comedic local TV personality.
Back in the Detroit area where Old School Sci Fi grew up, we had two: Sir Graves Ghastly played by Lawson Demming and Count Scary portrayed by Tom Ryan.
Sir Graves would begin the afternoon’s film by instructing viewers to “turn out your lights... draw the drapes... pull down the shades... cuddle up in your favorite spot by the telly...” just before starting the movie.
Count Scary, who traveled around Detroit in a pink 1955 Chrysler Imperial that was prone to overheating called the Scarymobile, would warn viewers that the upcoming film contained scenes so terrifying it would scare the pants off them. This was immediately followed by a pair of pants being thrown into the shot from off camera accompanied by a jarring musical chord.
HAPPY FREE COMIC BOOK DAY/80th BIRTHDAY OF BATMAN/STAR WARS DAY! This week, Frankentyner presents the Theater 5 drama “Little Girl, Little Girl”, tells you where you can win the portrait of Count Scary below and favors us with a very brief harmonica solo!
