How long have we been on this adoption journey?

This is a question I'm asked -- but I don't know the answer.  April will be 1 year since Joe and I went to the adoption open house at our now agency.  We had been discussing adoption for about 6 months before that.  After the open house we registered with LSS (our adoption agency) and were put on the waiting list.  6 months later, in October, we were taken off the list and we began the mountain of paperwork, had our fingerprints taken and went to the doctor for a physical.  We turned our paperwork in on November 11th.  With the government shut down we ended up waiting 2 months until our fingerprints and background checks were finalized.  Now it's January and we just booked our home visit for  February 21st -- the last thing on our checklist.  Then our home study will be approved.  Soooo...what do I tell people?  Has it been 9 months or only 2?

In my eyes neither of those are correct.  Our adoption journey began with us wanting children and to start our own family.  For me we have been on a long road to have children and that journey began over 2 and a half years ago.

I'll probably tell people 9 months...
