Good Intentions

Together with Anne Ruygt and Bertan Selim I curated the exhibition Currents #6: Good Intentions at Marres, House for Contemporary Culture, Maastricht. We visited graduation shows of 18 art academies and selected our favourite works. The result: an exhibition bringing together personal stories and political statements dealing with identity, youth and cultural traditions.

Goya’s Disasters of War

Why is Goya’s The Disasters of War, a series of prints created two centuries ago, still so powerful and modern? I stepped out of my modern art comfort zone to find out.

Palais de Tokyo

Palais de Toyko in Paris is one of my favorite places: even though I’m always very critical about exhibitions, theirs never disappoint me. So I decided to write about why I think it’s such a brilliant place. Hopefully the article inspires people to visit it when in Paris!

Internet Yami-ichi / Black Market

This Sunday I will give a tour at the Internet Yami-ichi, an offline Internet flea market at De Brakke Grond: “The Internet Yami-ichi / Black Market celebrates the Internet in all its glory at the buzzing setting of a flea market. The cultural miracle we call the Internet crawls away from behind the glaring screen and drags along our so very dear memes, trolls, cats and glitches as well as the Web’s most obscure details including MacBook air air, the You Cube channel and analogue scroll bars to the booths”. Berlin’s gallery scene

There are over 400 contemporary art galleries in Berlin. Many of them operate on a very professional level and represent some of the most interesting artists I know. Very much worth a visit when you’re in town. I found out why Berlin is such an important city in the contemporary art world.

Geoffrey Lillemon’s crazy universe

Bill Viola’s sublime video’s

De Nieuwe Kerk on Amsterdam’s Dam Square mounted an exhibition with only one artwork, Bill Viola’s diptych Fire Woman and Tristan’s Ascension. I wrote about the overwhelmingly beautiful work for SSBA Salon.

Berlinde de Bruyckere: sad/beautiful

I’ve always found Berlinde de Bruyckere’s sculptures intriguing but for me, there is something heavily melancholic about them. There is a show at the Gemeentemuseum right now, which I visited to find out why some many people find comfort in the work.
