I posted this song a little while ago (the original version anyways). I had only heard it because it's a standard of one of the regular open mic-ers I see (and it's my favourite cover she does too!) I thought I'd give it a go; turns out, it's really fun to play - Grace Potter & The Nocturnals' "Big White Gates."

Phish - Loving Cup (Rolling Stones cover)

Bob Dylan was a remarkable lyricist, obviously, but even after listening to him thousands of times one is still struck by the power of his simple phrasing, even the way he uses syllables. The opening line to Visions of Johanna - "Ain’t it just like the night to play tricks when you’re tryin' to be so quiet?" - is phrased as a simple question, yet if you have ever had insomnia you've asked this question a million times over and over.

Van Morrison had this ability too - his greatest love song begins with an exquisite declaration of everlasting life: "We were born before the wind, also younger than the sun."

Lou Reed too: "Between thought and expression lies a lifetime."

So why don't we often think about Jagger/Richards - as rock songwriters they were almost unparalleled. But as lyricists we don't often put in the same league as Dylan et al. I think that's because they primarily wrote about being the Stones. Not about being people, individuals, but about being the Glimmer Twins, the greatest band in the world, sticky fingers and let it bleed and all the stray cats they could devour.
