Control Top — Covert Contracts (Get Better)

Punk rock has evolved like the rest of the global economy, summoning its rage no longer on behalf of coal miners and factory workers but rather the one-check-from-disaster gig economy employees who toil precariously amongst required white collar signifiers. Control Top, a trio of Philly post-punkers named after an item of clothing no one wears outside the office, embody this new rage against the cubicle. The band—that’s Ali Carter on bass and vocals, Al Creedon (ex of Bleeding Rainbow) on guitar and Get Better label head Alex Lichtenauer on drums — rattles forward at a competitive dog-eat-dog pace, seething with anger but hitting their rapid-fire marks. Carter, in particular, is a force, knocking out blistering, fundamental bass lines and yelping, snarling and howling with disbelief at the idiotic constraints of modern life.  

This is Control Top’s first full-length, following the 2018 single “Type A,” where a taut, damaged bass riff induced discipline in a chaotic conflagration of sound. The single landed Control Top on Stereogum’s “40 Best New Bands of 2018,” and it sounds just as good, just as primal as the lead-off to this very fine album.  

Tight, driven, shattering rhythms fuel these tracks, bass and drums in frantic conjunction as Creedon’s guitar screams like a siren overhead. They run at an anxiety-driven pace with little opportunity for ornamentation. However, in a couple of the songs, a new wave-y melodicism rears its head (then ducks down before the bullets come). “Chain Reaction,” the second single, also leads from the bass, picking up febrile stabs of guitar as it goes. But the chorus approaches the anthemic, with Carter exhorting “Do anythingto prove you're right, lose everything to win the fight, light the wick, pull the trigger, what started small is getting bigger.” It’s almost a hook, almost a tune, though without compromising any of the momentum and clatter.

“Prism,” later, again strikes out towards tunefulness, in a dense mesh of guitars, as Carter stakes out a complicated identity.  “I don’t wanna be everything to everybody, I wanna be all of me, I’m not afraid of inconsistency, I’ve taken time to reflect, I’m ready for who I’ll be next,” she chants before launching a fierce and memorable refrain, “A prism is not a prison, you can be many things and still be whole.”  

It’s this mix of rage and positivity that makes Control Top so powerful. In the always-on, always-selling, always-one-mistake-from-the-abyss world that we currently inhabit, rage is a given, but self-determination is harder. Carter may eviscerate a disappointing other in “Unapologetic,” her voice fraying with outrage as she recounts, “It wasn’t your intention, you say, to make me feel this goddamn way,,” but she is not going to be defined by it. “Damaged goods can still be sold,” she concludes, and yes, whatever she's got, I’m buying.
