Ep93 Among The Missing
Another scene they cut out of an episode, damn them.
Those talented hands, calloused from ranch duties, could bring her to a fever pitch in minutes. He'd ruined her for city boys.
Baby-Daddy Cowboy - Vicki Lewis Thomspon
As a Texas girl, all I want is for one of these handsome cowboys to punish me. Bend me over a fence, over a knee. Tie me up. There's plenty of implements lying around. So many possibilities.
I’ve never written a Western themed story, perhaps I should, it’s such an evocative setting. Maybe it could take place in the wilds of a dusty frontier, populated by outlaws. Or involve a wild filly being skilfully snared by a lasso and taken to the musty old barn to her dress lifted.
Or perhaps something more elegant, as she’s pulled over his knee even on the veranda of a vast ranch estate, as the cicada chorus chirps, and the big pink sun sinks into the wide western horizon…
Red Dead Redemption 2′s Realism Succeeds by Focusing On The Fantasy, Not Punishment.
A common reaction I’ve seen from people playing Red Dead Redemption 2 is that the games slow pace, long stretches of nothing happening and sometimes beguiling “cores” system are all indicators of punishing the player, I’d argue that isn’t true at all. Instead, my thoughts on the matter boil down to the idea that Red Dead 2 has these purported flaws up front and constantly on display to effectively sell the cowboy fantasy Rockstar only scratched the surface of with the original Red Dead Redemption.
I’ve written before about Arthurs near glacial deliberate pace in performing actions enhances the connection the player feels with them, but I’d say that goes hand in hand with many of the systems in the game that are causing friction among some players. A lone outlaw riding across the plains, through the woods or in the snowy mountains and encountering nothing but gentle winds, star filled skies or biting cold may not make for a traditional good time in a video game, where the dopamine reward we expect has been boiled down to a near immaculate science, but in the old fantasies of really embodying that outlaw nothing could sell it more. More so than even many RPG’s with player created characters, I found myself role playing the exact type of person I think Arthur Morgan would be. He tries to do the right thing but is often openly gruff, he’ll always pitch in to help those in need and he fucking hates Micah.
He likes standing on mountains though, especially in the snow, big Skyrim fan this one.
Believe me, I’m as shocked as anyone about what I’m about to write, but the survival-lite gameplay of brushing your horse, making sure to eat food and occasionally bathing are extremely important to achieving the cowboy fantasy that permeates this game. That lone outlaw would set up camp under the stars and cook the turkey he shot earlier in the day. He’d go weeks without bathing, becoming covered in mud and dung that would drop of him like a layer of solid filth in the water. He’d even take the time to stop by the side of that long road through the woods to brush his dirty horse. These systems are not here to annoy the player, if you don’t want to engage in them you don’t even really have to, there’s quick options to solve most of your woes, take a dip in the river to wash filth off you or your horse, and Arthur carries around a full pantry of canned goods in his satchel he can simply eat without preparation to avoid having to set up camp and cook a meal.
In my opinion no punishment is intended in these little busy tasks, a traditional survival game would have you juggling ten different meters and if even one of them hit zero you’d drop dead, Red Dead Redemption 2 simply plucks the ideas that work from those and uses them as a way to bring you closer to the character you’re controlling. And in that way, it couldn’t have done a better job, now if you’ll excuse me I must mosey on back to my PS4 and see about a rustling scheme out in Strawberry…..pardner.
