NextNOW Fest Reflection Questions:
1. What did you see/hear/learn that was completely new to you?
I’m glad to say that I learned something new from all three performances! I have never been to a clown show before, mostly because the picture I had of clowns was one of scary, makeup covered, people climbing out of miniature cars and slapping each other over the head. The the “clowns” in this show were much more human, and much less scary and violent as I had imagined. I learned never to judge a show before you go see it with your own eyes. The Troker concert, with it’s interesting sounds and variety of instruments was completely out of my realm of musical familiarity. But I’m so glad I went because I thought that their style of music was intriguing and this was also my first concert too (I know crazy right)! Finally the Make Art Not War Installation opened my mind to a perspective of black life in the United States, that as a white female, I could never have seen with my own eyes.
2. What was your favorite performance/experience? Why was it your favorite?
I’m torn between wether the Make Art Not War Installation or the Troker concert was my favorite. The Troker concert was more enjoyable, I loved lounging on a bean bag, beneath the beautifully lit tent, memorized by the consistent flip of the drummers long black hair to the beat. But the Make Art Not War Installation so extremely eye opening and intensely touching.
3. How might one or more of the performances/experiences relate to the Arts Scholars theme of “Adaptation: Reimagine, Reframe, Recycle”?
The BrouHaHa performance did something I found to be funny, the pretended almost all of their props. They reimagined the idea of a play needing lots of different props to a performance that didn't use them but still non the less effective. The few props that they did use they were able to use time and time again to get optimal use out of them!
