How did Rangiku cope after Aizen abused her like that? Did she sense something was wrong? And what were her feelings when Gin wanted to become a shinigami? (I have more were these came from and hope I don't ask too much) :)
𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍 𝐀 𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐎𝐅 𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐈𝐊𝐔’𝐒 𝐒𝐎𝐔𝐋 ( 𝐎𝐑 𝐑𝐄𝐈𝐀𝐓𝐒𝐔 —- 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘 𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐆𝐀𝐌𝐈 𝐏𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐑 ) 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐏𝐋𝐔𝐂𝐊𝐄𝐃 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐀𝐒 𝐀 𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐃, I headcanon that Haineko actually chose to harbor those memories as a way of helping her master cope. The zanpakutō spirit doesn’t know who was responsible for issuing the orders behind such an invasive and utterly TRAUMATIC event, but she bears the burden of memory so as to protect her other half. I actually used to write my own interpretation of Haineko which was very far from the canon depiction of the zanpakutō spirit ( I haven’t been active there in quite some time, tho :x ) Regardless of Haineko carrying that heavy burden, Rangiku knows that something horrible happened to her as a child ––––- though she has no idea just how much it’s affected her. She struggles to achieve Bankai because of it, though Rangiku just assumes it’s because her zanpakutō spirit is too stubborn to teach her how to use it.
As a child, Rangiku would often have night terrors about that particular event. The faces of her attackers were always obscured in shadow; SHE WOULD HEAR THEIR VOICES, but would have no recollection as to what actually happened before she woke up on that dirt path to the sight of Ichimaru Gin, offering a persimmon as a means of getting her strength back up. Rangiku is often caught between feeling like these night terrors are somehow MEMORIES that she can’t fully recall, or just absolutely awful reoccurring dreams.
How would she cope with these frequent dreams...? She would distract herself by finding excuses to head deeper into their district in Rukongai to steal food and resources from angry vendors. SHE WOULD TRY TO HAVE FUN WITH GIN ––––––- whether they went swimming in a nearby lake during the warmer months or snuck out to watch the winter fireworks, Gin was always there to distract her from those darker moments.
Rangiku ultimately felt responsible for Gin’s involvement with the Shinigami –––––- HE DIDN’T WANT HER TO CRY ANYMORE, though she wasn’t quite sure how her night terrors related back to Gin’s decision to change things for them. Rangiku never aspired to become a Shinigami –––––- she only joined the Shin’ō Academy to follow after her childhood friend. RANGIKU HAS SEVERE ABANDONMENT ISSUES, and while she didn’t really want to make her way towards Seireitei, she did find happiness in never having to go hungry again, and having a nice roof over her head. She ended up feeling an extreme sense of GRATITUDE towards Gin for making that decision, all of those years ago.
When he started acting strange, however ––––––- AROUND THE TIME OF HIS INITIAL BETRAYAL ––––––- the blonde Lieutenant was reminded of their past; when Gin was always leaving in the middle of the night, only to return with excuses for each disappearance; constant deflection that infuriated her as a kid, only to make her feel remorseful and scared when those same antics started up again. Why hadn’t she demanded more from him? Why couldn’t he ever tell her the truth, or help her to understand what was going on? Her fears returned tenfold as he began to defect from Soul Society -–––––– THAT, SOMEHOW, SHE WAS TO BLAME FOR THIS. That those night terrors meant something more; that perhaps they weren’t just nightmares. What had she forgotten? Did Gin know something she didn’t? What had truly led Gin to start leaving her behind ... JUST WHAT WAS HE SEARCHING FOR?
Most importantly, why hadn’t she tried harder to confront him about these things as a child? Why did she avoid asking the harder questions? How could she even begin to ask him now, when she ultimately couldn’t bring herself to face the truth before?
I could go on and on about this fhsdjkfhFJKSDG like the root of the issue surrounding these two is that they both SUCK at communicating. So much of what happened was a direct result of their avoidance to talk about heavier issues or topics. Even in @godkilller’s Redemption verse, Rangiku is unable to bring herself to ask Gin WHY he did what he did ... it’s a constant issue both of them have to navigate, especially if they actually want to resolve all of this and mend their bond / relationship.
