Kaneki’s phone chimed in a new notification. The hour was ungodly enough for Kaneki to immediately assume it was Hide. And it was, of course it was.

A collage of random pictures popped up before his eyes and three little dots indicating Hide was typing. He studied the picture for a second, totally uncomprehending before Hide sent a new message.

“If you don’t get this we’re over.” And then he quickly double texted. “Wow that was fast why are you up?”

“I wasn’t you woke me up.” Kaneki typed back, yawning.

“Sorry man.” Kaneki knew Hide wasn’t at all apologetic.

“I don’t get it.”

“Are you serious, our relationship is on the stake here, can you at least try?”

“Fine, alright.” Kaneki rolled his eyes.

He studied the picture a little bit more. There was a figure pointing at his direction then some wooden planks then a knotted rope..

You wood knot?

Kaneki felt his soul die a bit.

“Oh my god Hide, I swear to god..” Kaneki typed and went back to the picture to confirm his thoughts.

A bee and a leaf. A new message came but Kaneki ignored it as he felt his brain cells commit mass suicide. The pointing man again, a pair of eyes.

The word ‘IF’. Wow they weren’t even trying anymore.

Kaneki scrolled down and looked at Hide’s message, which was just a string of incongruous letters and chuckled at Hide’s overly excitable nature.

“Istfg” he typed quickly and went back to see it through.

Ten to the power of seven, he didn’t even need to know math to know it’s ten million. A picture of flames and a fly.

“You’re a disgrace to Owl City. Will the internet please stop ruining genuinely good songs?” Kaneki groaned out loud as he typed.

“What do you mean ruin these are some quality memes. You win though so I guess I gotta put up with you a bit more.”

“Maybe not, after waking me up in the middle of the night to send me memes, you get no kisses for a week.”

“WHAAAAAAT WHYY?!”

Kaneki laughed and typed back. “Fine, 24 hours. But next time I’ll block you.”

“Boo, you’re no fun.” He could feel Hide pouting through the screen.

“You should be thankful I’m so lenient. Well I’m dead tired and have fireflies stuck in my head now. So goodnight.”

“Sweet dreams, love you!

Kaneki blushed and a small smile tugged at his lips.

“You too.. ♡” Kaneki shut his phone and fell asleep with his lips a huge upwards crescent.

Writing Prompt: Write down at least 5 traits you would want a character to have if you were writing a story.

What traits I desire would depend on what story I was writing. If it was a horror story and the main character was a victim, I would want them to be brave at the wrong times and fearful when it is unnecessary. I would make them paranoid when it is just a frog under the floorboards, and dismissive when it is a mutant in the music room. Perhaps they could cleverly partake in witty banter with their companions but be struck speechless when the sphinx gives her riddle. Or maybe the protagonist is the monster. My monster would be shameless. Those who are not him are lesser creatures, even if they share the same biological categorization. A victim dies? Be victorious. Remorse is a weak trait. You get stabbed in the leg? Who needs both legs, you can outsmart the idiots with NO legs! Obviously, the victim will probably die a cliché death as the protagonist. The villain as the protagonist? He probably fell in love with his reflection and is currently drowning in a well trying to make out with himself.
