Surprise.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Chapter 15.
It took awhile.
The dumbest fuck on the planet is President of the United States.
l'état, c'est moi
Getting the strongest impression that the real purpose behind this dreadful and unlawful new war is that the president kind of just wants to have the full 'presidential' experience, sort of like when you go to Vegas or go on a cruise and you want the full package; so now he's a war-time president because he wants to be that guy, and enjoy that image of himself.
It's the dumbest imaginable iteration of the tyrant. The state is not an apparatus he controls, an extension of his vigorous and all-powerful will; it's a mirror in which he may view himself from every flattering angle at once.
Oh, yes, he's busy being the President; but his idea of being President is nothing more or less than 'the most important guy on earth.'
He clearly wants to be a Chakravartin King, a person who turns the wheels of the world - but he has no interest in ruling. Only in being the king, occupying the precise center of the universe.
DJ BASIC strikes again!
L'atelier de musique - the vinyl guys.
Simon Roper does a great job of breaking down what Chat GPT is actually doing and how a 'niche' research topic can reveal its limitations.
If you want just the excellent final analysis, it begins around 22:20. (If you want the excellent deep dive, watch the whole thing. It's only about 31 minutes long.)
I am honestly not precisely sure what is going on here, but I am a little bit in love.

A lot has been going on at Rancho Judy. But we survived it all, and here is Chapter 13. I apologize for the hiatus.

"The irreversible gravity of killing, coupled with the lack of a substantive legal justification, is bringing into sharper view a structural weakness of law as a check on the American presidency."
This wonky-looking link is a gift link to a new NYT story by Charlie Savage analyzing the current administration's approach to governing in ways that contravene the rule of law. It is clearly written and helps explain how heavily past presidents' obedience of laws has depended on norms--norms that Trump delights in breaking.
Any path forward will have to reckon with this aspect of Trump's conduct; any future footing for a law-governed US will need to find a way to inoculate us against this kind of actor.

To be fair, 20 years ago was like 50 years ago.
1990 was ten years ago, which makes it really confusing that people born in 1990 are 35 years old.
Anyway, not only am I wii-remote old, I was 20 when my ex-mum asked my dad, as he powered up the wii, "Are you wearing your strap-on?"
I am from the time when the Two Trees still bloomed in Valinor, yo.

Useful and clear, especially the connection back to Reagan and his disastrous anti-democratic policies.
