I'm bored
I'm a beginner horse genetics nerd so let's try to figure out the whole sugarman/horseman family coat genetics without looking anything up on google 👍
joseph sugarman
hes either a buckskin or a bay dun. honestly, I think the show did the horse markings DIRTY, like theyre not very accurate to actual horses but oh well. still thats the reason I'm strugglng to tell whether hes a buckskin or dun, but every dillema like this should just be treated as buckskin unless proven otherwise. I forgot he had those ear markings and I thought that maybe, MAYBE they could suggest that hes a bay dun, but iirc primitive markings are at the back of the ears so... buckskin it is. he is also a carrier for the flaxen gene and possibly a carrier of the cr gene (but idk since we never see his parents) and ofc has point agouti gene since hes a bay also his facial marking is a star
honey sugarman
I just said that every horse is non dun unless proven otherwise but I have no other explanation for honey other than her being a red dun (given the fact that her mane is clearly not black OR chestnut diluted AND its darker than her coat) so yeah shes a red dun (my current fav coat color 😁) and shes also a carrier to the flaxen gene aaand if joseph isnt, shes a carrier for the cr gene! also I do wish the character designers would actually put primitive markings on her to signify that shes a dun 💔 imagine if she had zebra stripes on her arms n stuff
crackerjack sugarman
hes a flaxen! also hes a standard chestnut. anyway he inherited the flaxen genes from both of his parents! I'm pretty sure his facial marking is a snip, but a pretty big one! thats kinda it. nothing much to be said but hes so cute tho
beatrice horseman
shes a palomino! and she inherited it from one of her parents but I DONT KNOW WHO.... her face marking is also a star like joseph's. she is a chestnut horse (bc shes palomino) so we cant see this, but shes a carrier of the point agouti gene from joseph
I love palominos theyre pretty though darker palominos look a little silly to me. anyway I remember being really obsessed with beatrice when I watched the show 5 years ago because she vaguely reminds me of my mom. also she mogs everyone else in the show
butterscotch horseman
bc he has a grey coat with black mane, hes a grulla, but once again the show failed us when it comes to showing primitive markings :')) his facial marking is a bigass blaze which is my fav face marking along with uneven bald face (actually I also love badger face but thats 3 markings already, too many for the 1st fav spot) and I thiiiinkkkk his genotype is a/a E/e? bc of bojack and hollyhock? also grulla is my fav coat atm along with red dun. as you guys can see, I like duns
bojack horseman
HES A BORING ASS BAY IM CRYING 😭😭😭😭😭 AINT NO WAY 😭😭😭 BRO HAS NO DUN GENES OR DILUTION GENES 😭😭😭 CANT HAVE SHIT IN HOLLYWOO 😭😭😭 also his facial markings are a star + snip I guess. and he is bay because beatrice is a black on points gene carrier, if bea didnt have it, he'd be fully black bc of butterscotch. also all this is in good fun, I love bays, theyre really pretty, I just find it funny how among all these dilution genes his parents have, he ended up being the John Horse
hollyhock fuck-ass-last-name
I think shes a red dun because of butterscotch. visually, she could even be a strawb roan but, like, iirc roan gene doesnt skip a generation so she has nowhere to inherit it from since her mother is a human (??? is she a human? I forgot) also if butterscotch's genotype is E/e then how the fuck is she an e/e? if her mother is not a horse? unless in the bojack universe non horses carry horse genes too? I'm just really confused can anyone explain this to me? also her face marking is, you guessed it, a star. ALSO SPEAKING OF HER MOTHER NOT BEING A HORSE how the fuck does she have an arabian phenotype??? butterscotch is definitely a coldblood breed where the fuck did we get an arabian from? is henrietta's mom an arabian? a chestnut arabian horse? with roan? for hollyhock to look like this? what happened??
HONORABLE MENTION - Secretariat (because he is bojack's dad. for some reason)
red :) (just a regular chestnut with a stripe marking! nothing crazy)
Kiiiiiinda old drawings but I'm proud of it so have some horses 🐎🐎🐎🐎
Reviewed: A Peculiar Effect on the BBC -- The Story of Bernard Wilkie
“Imagination is a marvellous thing and I’m addicted to it, but real life and practicality can ruin the most vivid of illusions. While the director went away with his expectations in tact I was left with the business of turning his expectations into practicality.” Television in Britain was still in its infancy when twenty-something Bernard Wilkie first took an interest in guiding his prospects…
