Thank you, Deepali Dewan @deepalidewa for inviting me to the conversation connected to Swapnaa Tamhane @swapnaa_tamhane exhibition on view at @romtoronto right now. Look forward to our conversation with Shanay Jhaveri @shanaypjhaveri on June 8! Link in bio to register! FREE Zoom program. RSVP Required. ROM Connects Reframing Art. Craft. Design Wednesday, June 8, 2022, 11:00 am to 12:00 pm EDT Challenging the colonial hierarchical separation of art, craft, and design is one of the thematic notions raised in ROM’s newest exhibition, Swapnaa Tamhane: Mobile Palace – a visual feast consisting of sweeping block-printed and embroidered textile installations. ROM curator Deepali Dewan takes a closer look with special guest speakers, Met curator Shanay Jhaveri and Critical Craft Forum co-founder Namita Gupta Wiggers. Shanay Jhaveri explores how artists have responded to the city of Chandigarh, designed by the Swiss-French modernist architect, Le Corbusier, in the early years of India’s independence, while Namita Gupta Wiggers shares the thinking behind “craftscape”, a term she coined to describe the reframing of craft as something more than just a commodity. Swapnaa Tamhane: Mobile Palace is on now until August 1 2022. The exhibition catalogue, Swapnaa Tamhane: Mobile Palace Exhibit Guide is available for sale alongside Sar: The Essence of Indian Design.
