The Astrologer (1976)
I often wonder what, exactly, drives the rapid canonization of specific cult films. Most batshit, off-the-rails midnight movies totally deserve their Cult Film status, but there are plenty of other titles that’re just as deliriously bonkers in their filmmaking but never grow the audience needed for that communal glorification. Pinpointing what makes a cult movie like Birdemic or Troll 2 more…

The Astrologer is the most WTF cult classic you've never seen, and may never get a chance to see.
LATE SHIFT AT THE GRINDHOUSE
The Astrologer (1975) is about an astrologer, who rises from carnival fortune teller to media mogul superstar. It stars director Craig Denney as Craig, and the narcissism just continues from there. Most of the dialogue is very technical-speak about actual astrology and business strategies (I can’t tell you how many times they used the word “diversification”). And indeed, most of the conflict comes from these abstract ideas as well.
It’s unclear whether or not Craig has actual astrological powers or not, but he couldn’t be a more boring character. He’s just a smug asshole from beginning to end. And the film ends with a King Lear quote that delivers the closest thing to a theme.
The Astrologer is a real treat as far as bad movies go, but you’ll have trouble finding it. Denney used Moody Blues songs for the entire soundtrack which was completely unlicensed. The film never got a wide release and is unavailable on home video.
