I haven't seen black trumpet mushrooms (Craterellus cornucopioides) since I did a field season in the Appalachians a decade ago. This is my first time seeing them in Wisconsin!

Horn of plenty - Craterellus cornucopioides from last September.
Craterellus sp. Colloquially it is known by many names, but my absolute favorite is “trumpet of the dead.” So fucking goth! This genus is very closely related to chanterelles (Cantharellus), and many species are considered quality edibles. I’m just here for the aesthetic though, and was very happy to come across these for the first time
