“Funny.” He returned, but it was with amusement.  “It’s more than that I guess.  Either the sand has swallowed it up by now, or someone else has moved in.   Either way, it’s more effort than it’s worth to go back to Tatooine, even just for a little light arson-- which, I’m sure you know, was also listed as one of my crimes against the Empire.”

     “I’m terribly sorry,” William backtracked, grimacing at the young woman’s response. “That came out much harsher than I’d intended. Please, sit.” He indicated the cushioned stool across from him, on the other side of the low table displaying an ornate tea set.

His head was bowed over Ben in his arms, pacing around the room with slow, absent steps.  All of his attention was on his son, his tiny fingers, his little nose, his closed, sleepy eyes.  He’d placed the index finger of his left hand in Ben’s palm, and the infant held on and, it seemed to Luke, wouldn’t let go.  He didn’t mind.  Luke hadn’t thought Mara was awake, but he smiled to hear her voice and moved to sit on the edge of the bed next to her, carefully holding Ben against his chest.

“It’s easier to believe now.” He admitted, finally pulling his finger from Ben’s grasp to take Mara’s hand.  “It’s-- still scary, but in a whole different way.

“What about you?  How do you feel?”

He hated this.  He was sure that Mara hated it more, but that was cold comfort at best.  He hated that she was sick-- deathly ill.  If odds were anything to go by, it was unlikely that she would survive.  That hurt, and he hated it-- and there wasn’t much else he could do about it, except try to be by her side and take advantage of every moment.

“We’ll head back to Coruscant,” He said after Mara got situated, “I’m more worried about you.  Do you think you’ll be alright for the trip back?”

“Maybe.”  He said, screwing his nose up a little as he reflected on the datapad he was holding, though he received Mara’s kiss gratefully.  He wasn’t much of a writer-- coming up with their own vows was moving enough, for sure, and the only way to guarantee that what they wanted to say was said, but he didn’t feel like he was very good at it. 

“I feel like I’ve been working on this forever.” He added, rubbing at his eyes with one hand, but stretching out where he sat up in bed next to Mara, trying to work a kink out of his shoulder. 

“Maybe the Force will-- ever so luckily-- give me a better idea of what to say.”

It had, somehow, helped him to get Mara to fall in love with him.

He was still healing so cooking was a little difficult, which was why it was nice that Mara was able to bring up something for dinner.  He moved a little stiffly but came over to the table to sit down, beaming brightly at her.  It was sweet of Mara to take care of him.  “I’ll be back up and in the kitchen in another day or so probably.  Thanks for bringing dinner.  It smells great.”
