I T’ S I N D O N E S I A N When Uncle took photographer Ken Downie to It’s Java for Sunday Brunch, Ken assumed it would be similar to Malaysian Cuisine. Not quite! Uncle had to explain the subtleties of Indonesian food compared to Malaysian but truth be told, the conclusion is just it’s totally sedap. Weekends is pretty social at It’s Java as Indonesians congregate here to chinwag over familiar dishes as there’s a dearth of Indonesian eateries. After much deliberation, Ken opted for the Nasi Goreng Gila (Crazy Fried Rice), served with marinated chicken, vegetables, fried egg, pickles and crackers. Gila but sedap! Uncle had the Bubur Ayam (rice porridge/congee) simmered in chicken stock, topped with quail egg, cakwe (you tiaw/ yau cha kueh), marinated shredded chicken, fried soy beans, spring onion and fried shallots with onion crackers (kerupuk) on the side. It even has a satay of chicken giblets/gizzards and livers. Uncle asked for a light kecap which he drizzled over the Bubur. Truly slurpworthy! Terima kasih, Juru Masak Wa-one Darmawan @chefonewa. Instead of his usual latte, Ken was adventurous enough to try the Kopi Aren, coffee with gula melaka and coconut milk made by Barista Zemmy. He thinks he needs time to truly appreciate the rather rich Kopi Aren. #nasigorenggila #crazyfriedrice #buburayam #chickenporridge #indonesiancongee #enak #kopiaren #itsjava #vinegarlane #ponsonby (at IT’S Java) https://www.instagram.com/p/B67i0UUpeug/?igshid=ry579d89p2xg
