Pop culture (2)
Without "Louie Louie" a symphony is not quite so grand.

Pop culture
What exactly devides pop culture from high culture? Is it the music? The image? The basic idea? The philosophy behind it? The fact, that most of the „high“ stuff seem to have an academic background, while the „pop“ stuff doesn’t? And would that mean, that the academic thing is the valuable thing, while pop culture is entertaining, but irrelevant?
No.
I think, down to the core „pop“ means that it‘s part of our collective memory, no matter if it’s actually art or just crap. You don’t really have other criteria. Almost everybody has heard of this song, that book, this picture – even without having a clue, if it means something.
The problem is: Shakespeare, Leonardo DaVinci or Mozart actually became pop culture, but McDonalds, Volkswagen or Joseph Stalin too. So, what do you think? Is it a good thing, a bad thing, an ugly thing or is it just like it is, without any jugdement?
And what does all that mean for the lesser known rock band? Is rock music still at the top of the „pop“ game? Does rock music exist as an art form, even if it appears under the „pop culture radar“?
I think so.
