I work as a casual visual arts and ceramics tutor and technician for local council. I also do a lot of intermittent contract tutoring work, all of which has been cancelled. My colleagues and I are not eligible for the government wage subsidy as the federal government has decided local council workers, even if they have worked there longer than 12 months, are not covered by JobKeeper. Recent funding cuts to dozens of galleries, festivals and arts organisations by the Australia Council mean opportunities in the future are limited for artists. Some countries are providing additional funding to the arts, while this government is using COVID-19 as an excuse to make cuts to an industry already in crisis. We need to be investing in the arts right now to ensure its survival into the future!
