‘Creativity in the City’, a public event exploring the life of creatives living in London (Victoria & Albert Museum, London, 2012)
‘Creativity in the City’ was an event devised, curated and run by members of the Victoria & Albert Museum’s youth board, CreateVoice, alongside the Learning Department team. The event, following on from the Cultural Olympiad of 2012, sought to engage members, selected artists and the public with the concept of creativity in urban areas - specifically London. CreateVoice members explored the unique benefits of working in a city environment for those in artistic practice, asking questions about modernity and the contemporary. Five artists working at Great Western Studios - Jimmy Turrell, Kate Gibb, Banke Kuku, Suky Best & David Ajasa-Adekunle - were invited to lead workshops and create artwork based on the concept for display in the museum, as well as producing workshops open to the general public on the evening.
As well as the planning and organisation of the event, I was involved in supplying photography and graphics to the screen printing & risograph workshops with Jimmy Turrell and Kate Gibb and the production of posters for display at the event. I also worked with filmmaker Suky Best and other CreateVoice members to produce a short art film displayed in the museum. In addition, I filmed and edited short interviews with London artists and creatives about the experience of working in London’s creative environment, as well as providing general assistance to museum staff and artists on the evening and during workshops.
Game Changers: focusing on the links between sport & design (Victoria & Albert Museum, London, 2013)
Inspired by the London 2012 Olympics, CreateVoice members devised Game Changers, a free evening of programming for the public, exploring the collision of design and sport. External participants included design & innovation firm IDEO, designer Ben Wilson, fashion curator Tory Turk and artist Jasleen Kaur. Visitors also took part in creative workshops with graphic designers to create their own posters for Rio 2016 based on the V&A’s Olympic Poster collection. (Full programme here.)
In addition to assisting with the organisation and running of the event, I also photographed the evening and provided the design for the public programme covers. I took inspiration from technologies associated with sports and their development into the items we know today.
Have you seen our next event? Co-curated by CreateVoice, Making It will offer talks, workshops and insights into careers in art and design.
