I've been photographing Corporate Social Responsibility assignments across Africa for years. I know first hand how one small borehole in the centre of a village can totally transform everybody's quality of life, including the cows. Most of us reading this post, will never know what it means to carry a gallon full of water on our heads for several kilometers. We will never know the tension it builds in the neck, the damage it does to the back and the patch of baldness it creates on the scalp over time. So when Hershey's or Nestle or Novartis or Sogea Satom calls me, I pick up my gear excitedly, intent on helping them tell their story well. If I can show them how much impact a single borehole is transforming lives, they will be motivated to do more... and I have seen them do more. I personally think it is wrong to say: "How can such a rich company donate only one borehole". It is better to say: "If just one borehole can be such a blessing to a community, what will two boreholes do?" When we use the latter approach, we come on the sides of these companies and inspire them to do more out of delight and not out of guilt. So, now you know why I travel across Africa documenting Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives by some of the world's biggest brands.
