How to deal with the fear in creating art
People who create have to deal daily with fears–fear of failure, fear of success, fear of the blank page, fear of running out of ideas, fear that others will not like their art, etc. With all of these fears, it is a wonder that any art gets made. On a whim, I decided to do a combined word count of all the posts of Nazin Quest I’ve written since resuming it, just over two months ago now, and it came up to 29,755 words. Which is... not nothing?
Like, some of them don’t ‘count’ as much as full standalone prose, because some posts are simple answers to factual questions (such as “Are there any alleyways nearby?” or “How well would that cloak conceal our face?”) and others are not edited as thoroughly as standalone prose might be (since they have to be posted in a prompt fashion that does not allow for later editing), but many of the longer sequences really do have a fair bit of time and care put into them.
I feel I may have been undervaluing this, when I look back and think that I haven’t managed to get anything done on any creative projects for the last month or two. And I have thought that quite a bit, and felt legitly bad about the rut I’ve gotten myself stuck in, but 30k words of any kind of edited and posted prose isn’t ‘nothing’, surely.
(Not to mention the couple essays I’ve also written in the same span of time)
Still, it’s kind of hard to shake the idea that this isn’t ‘real’ productivity, and that it’s easy enough in contrast to larger projects that it doesn’t quite count. Probably a toxic way to look at things, really.
