Meaning of dreams: portal out of a blind basement
The dream begins in the basement of a new apartment building (where my mother moved after selling the house where she, my grandma, and I lived during high school. This move was highly unpleasant for me, which is why I’ve been living independently on my own ever since).
Standing in the basement on my left is my high school art teacher, who was really cool back then. He draws a speech bubble (like in a comic book) right into the air in front of us. We are looking at the back wall of the basement, not toward the door. Inside this bubble is a portal—an exit from the basement and a gateway to living in that house and high school reality again. Except this time, I’ve already graduated, so I’m free to just explore this re-entered reality more loosely.
The next frame after entering the bubble portal is on the balcony of the old house. From there, I go out into the street, or maybe somewhere up and to the left inside the house? To a party filled with many kids (who are my age because I am young there again). We are in a room/balcony, walking in a line, each taking a turn to look at the view. Then, an unpleasant feeling hits, and suddenly I am back in the basement. But this time, I realize that the teacher had offered me an exit from what felt like a dead end (a blind basement).
I woke up breathing easier, understanding that the solution to a harsh reality is how we interpret it. It inspired me to create—perhaps to actually make a comic about facing that relocation and moving out. Back then it happened physically; now, finally, it’s happening spiritually.
The Interpretation (Analysis)
This is a psychological process of integrating the past, where your mind is finally processing.
Here is a breakdown of the symbols:
1. The New Basement vs. The Old House
The new building's basement represents feeling trapped, stuck in a "dead end," and carrying the emotional baggage of that unwanted move. Looking at the wall instead of the door symbolizes feeling like there is no way out of that change.
The house with your mom and grandma symbolizes your safe haven at the time—your roots and identity, which were abruptly disrupted by the move (forcing you into early independence).
2. The Art Teacher as the "Guide"
The "cool" art teacher acts as the Wise Old Man / Inner Guide archetype. Art is the catalyst here—representing creativity, expression, and reshaping your own reality.
The Comic Speech Bubble: This is a genius stroke by your subconscious. It literally turned your life story into a medium (a comic) that you have control over.
The Portal: The message is clear—the way out of past anxiety and the "basement" isn't physical avoidance, but creative processing. Because you've "already graduated" (you are now an adult with experience), you can revisit those memories as an explorer, no longer as a victim of circumstances.
3. The Balcony, the Party, and the Return
The balcony and the street symbolize expanding horizons and regained freedom.
The party with peers and the shared view show a desire to experience that period of youth lightly and effortlessly, just like peers who didn't have to face such drastic life upheavals.
The brief return to the basement happens right when the unpleasant feeling creeps back. Your dream pulls you back to the start just to show you the contrast—making you realize that creativity (the teacher) just handed you the key to a dead end.
