10 sec 1 bayt (2009)

For a few months in 2009, a Tajik telecommunication company promoted their services by offering the first 10 seconds of any phone call for free. This freebie prompted a new art form — the 10 second conversation.

Inspired by this contemporary cultural form and the Tajik tradition of 2-verse poetry (or 'bayt'), I collaborated with engineer/hacker Connor Dickie to create a competition for the best ten second poem. Tajiks could call in using any kind of cell phone, record their poem after a prompt. The number was instantly published online at 10sec1bayt.com and juried by a group of Tajik superstar poets and Habiba Jalivova, the "Oprah of Northern Tajikistan." The selected ten second poems were then published over the radio airwaves, on the television, in the printed newspaper, and during the national news hour in the form of a ten second text scrawl.

The project's title, 'Bayt' (pronounced 'bite' in English), refers to both the Tajik word for the short 2-verse poem popularized to Western audiences by the Rubayat, written in the 12th century by poet Omar Khayyam. 'Bayt' also resembles in sound the English noun that means, 'a small piece' (as in, "Just a bite"), and the 'byte', an internationally recognized unit used to measure quantities of digital data.

of the earth, but not this one

one can see an alien transporting between the mirage of a desert oasis and a far away galaxy. the real life, 2d image of the alien juxtaposes the low-poly, 3d world. the alien swiftly fleeing from each scene, only to be met with an empty galaxy or a false paradise, might make one wonder, where does this alien truly belong? where did they come from? perhaps they traveled from an earth-like plant far, far away? were they born from soil not of this earth, but another one; a cosmic golem with no creator to return home to?

this piece was created in april 2024 with the provocations of "what does it mean to be othered?" and "what does belonging feel like?" in mind. i want to shout-out the model, my beautiful, gorgeous, and talented friend, fae, for being awesome enough to agree to my escapades. i don't often use real-life models (other than myself) in my works.

of the earth, but not this one was made primarily using unity 3d, adobe premiere pro, and three.js to be played on an infinite loop. it was originally meant as a sister piece to souls in symbiosis as the 2nd installment in my "dyad dissonance, corporeal consonance" series.

during the time of creation, i was heavily interested in exoplanets. actually, it was quite jarring to begin research on exoplanets right as scientists observed trappist-1e randomly destroyed its own atmosphere. i also wrote a poem regarding the fragility of life inspired by this, but it is now lost with time (not a very good poet). still, the concept of another earth is alluring. likewise, i was listening to a lot of fka twigs, particularly her song "fallen alien." the medieval march motif of the song which mixed the sci-fi imagery of aliens with the christian fallen angel archetype really resonated with me, especially during that moment in time. aliens, fallen angels, ghosts. all The Other.
