Genesis thoughts because I gained sentience by accident

Okay quick disclaimer before I start: this is not about Christianity, Christians, or belief. I’m talking about God as a literary character in the Bible, the same way we talk about kings, narrators, or creators in any other text. Please do not put words in my mouth I am begging.

Anyway…

Something that drives me insane is how often modern media gets criticized for portraying “false gods” or cruel creator figures when they are literally just following the logic already present in Genesis. God creates humans without knowledge, places them in a controlled paradise, gives them a rule they do not yet have the moral framework to understand, and then enacts permanent, world-altering punishment the moment they gain the ability to discern good and evil at all. Adam and Eve do not knowingly choose evil. They choose knowledge. And the response is exile, suffering, death, and inherited guilt.

And what’s fascinating to me is that when modern stories recreate this exact structure, a god, a parent, a system, a creator who punishes innocence for curiosity, we read it as tragic. We call it cruel. We say the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. We say knowledge shouldn’t be treated as sin. But when it’s God in the Bible, we’re taught to read it as justice by default.

Not because the actions are different. Because the framing is.

God as a literary character in Eden is deeply invested in hierarchy. Knowledge collapses that hierarchy, so knowledge must be punished. And I think it’s interesting, not blasphemous, not anti-religion, just interesting, that the same narrative bones, when stripped of assumed moral infallibility, immediately read as a story about control, power, and the cost of curiosity.
