the opening credits definitely take some getting used to. update on the theme song: now that i'm rewatching, i have listened to the theme song a total of 22 times. after the 18th listen, i wrote in my notes that i was now actively into the whole song except for the opening lines, which i had upgraded from total aversion to indifference. also i had the song stuck in my head yesterday. @mrchicsaraleo said something about liking the song because of the lyrics, so i wonder if understanding what the lyrics are saying would have helped me get there faster. future research is needed.
as for the visuals, i'm now wondering if adachi is actually wearing a sweater after all - maybe it's just a long-sleeved knit shirt? apologies if i misled anyone on that count, but it’s still a good piece of clothing, whatever it is. what i like about the sequence is that they're clearly in their own separate apartments, but their actions are in dialogue with each other - like, kurosawa opens the curtains and then adachi wakes up with the sun in his face, kurosawa pours a glass of water and then adachi drinks a glass of water, etc. someone had fun with that!
