Is There Any Other Way To Dispute Credit Report Errors Rather Than Online?
In the United States of America, having a credit report is essential for you to avail all the financial benefits and recognition. It is very easy to have your credit report go negative. It just requires one missed payment of your credit card debt or your utility bill, and your credit score will keep on falling and falling unless you make the payment in full and get the credit report back on track. However, having a stronger credit report makes you eligible to get financial assistance from every kind of financial institution, without much investigation.
In the US alone, 4 out of 5 credit reports which are generated, have some or the other kind of error in it – be it incorrect details, outdated personal information, or any other discrepancy. There are two ways to solve the matter. You can either dispute credit report errors online or can do the same by mail. Though the former method is much quicker and safer to use, we will talk about the latter today.
In this method, the first thing that you need to do is to contact the major bureaus and submit a dispute in writing. You can do it using certified mail, but don’t forget to request a return receipt. In your letter, all you need to mention is the details of the corrections that you have encountered and the actions that you would want to be taken regarding those mistakes, that is, whether you want them to be deleted completely or want them to be corrected.
To support your dispute, provide as many documentation proofs as possible, but avoid submitting the originals and you will need these for your case further. Once you have done that, the bureau has 30 days to solve the matter. Within that time, what they will do is they will request the respective provider (who did the mistake) to resolve the matter at their end. Once the matter has been resolved, the provider will send you the information about the corrections, along with the copy of your updated file. This information will also be provided to all the institutions that might have requested your credit report during the last 6 months. Moreover, you can also request the updated file to be sent to any other place where you looked up for employment in the past 2 years.
