YARRA RIVER AT MELBOURNE’S NEAR EAST: 1936/38

This aerial shot looks east over the Yarra River and the near city suburbs of Cremorne, Richmond and South Yarra in the foreground, with parts of Burnley and Toorak beyond.

Note the barges docked at the industrial site in Cremorne at the bottom.

Centre picture is the Church Street Bridge, linking Richmond on the left with South Yarra on the right.

Melbourne High School is on the south western corner of Chapel Street and Alexandra Avenue.

Opposite the school, on the south eastern corner is the landmark factory opened by Hecla Electrical in 1925, and taken over by Electrolux in 1936.

Beyond that, one can see Herring Island and Toorak’s Como Park. Herring Island is an 8 acre man made island, the only island on the Yarra. It was created in 1928 when a new river course was cut through the old basalt quarry at left to help control flooding in the area.The Island was leased for many years by the Boy Scout movement, who named it after their leader, Sir Edmund Herring: Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Lieutenant Governor of Victoria. It is only accessible by launch and today is a native bird refuge and Art (sculpture) precinct.
