The eighth and final entry in Peter Lovesey's series of novels to feature Victorian detective, Sergeant Daniel Cribb, Waxwork was published in 1978. The following year it was adapted by Granada as the pilot episode of a new series starring Alan Dobie as Cribb: a full series ran from 1980 to 1981. This Penguin reprint is from 1979.

I was watching an episode of Cribb, a 1980-81 BBC TV series about a Victorian police detective, when who should I spy but the owner of the mustache that launched a thousand spaceships, Biggs Darklighter himself! Garrick Hagon plays a flunky of P.T. Barnum who's in town to buy an elephant from the London Zoo; he becomes a suspect when the sweet old lady bidding against him is murdered.
