Northern Cricket Frog (Acris crepitans), taken March 11, 2026, in Georgia, US

A tiny frog peeking at me from under the water on the edge of a stream! This cutie was one of tons of frogs I found on Wednesday, all getting a head start on this breeding season. It's early March, and there are already tons of tadpoles in the flooded portions of the field I was in! The cricket frogs are, as always, the most numerous, but I did find a couple other species roaming around the edges of shallow pools, maybe waiting for night to fall before breeding. Regardless, I missed my frogs, and I look forward to watching their progress this spring!

I've been in a bit of a rut for motivation lately after a brief illness, so I haven't generated any new content on here. But I think this stunning cricket frog is worth sharing. This is a very cool little species that comes in a huge array of colors, though I find the ones with this bright green dorsal pattern especially striking.

[ID: Seven images of various different cricket frogs. The first one is all brown and is sitting partially submerged in water. The second is another solid brown one that is sitting on the side of my hand. The next shows one that has a few green spots on it sitting on some grass that is partially submerged in water. The next frog is in this grassy area as well, but this frog is solid grey-ish brown. The next is another one with green speckles that is also sitting in shallow water. The final two pictures are of the same frog sat on a small stick. This one has a reddish-orange stripe down its back. In the first one, the stick is held out of the water and in the second it's sitting in shallow water. /End ID]

Lots of little guys!! I absolutely adore cricket frogs, it's just so much fun to see all the variance in these dudes. Not to mention that they're just cute

When pursued, cricket frogs can jump really high - 60x the length of their body. Which is only about 3 feet, but that's the same as a human jumping as high as a 38-story building.

Beautiful girl. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!!!
