“ Are you asleep?” he whispered, hoping that if the other has succumbed to the fatigue and felt lost in the world of dreams, he wouldn’t wake him up. Yet, there was that persisting urge in him to show and say how grateful he was to his best friend for giving him a home. @crimefightur

“Tell me you did not just pour the milk in before you poured the cereal in.” Helena said, somewhat flatly. “I’m trying really hard not to judge you right now.”

“ Archie, I appreciate everything, I really do but you’re for real going out of your way for me to stay here and like...it’s nice but I feel like I’m becoming a burden. ” Joaquin was tempted to continue and mention how he was almost shocked that the red-head wanted anything to do with him still after his sinful act. It was that way with the Serpents, Jughead had given him the cold shoulder once they found him in the woods after his own escape from the juvenile penitentiary.

     THEY  HADN’T  EXACTLY  HAD  THE  BEST  START,      sweet  pea  had  an  obvious  distaste  for  the  northsiders,  especially  for  any  northsider  that  was  associated  with  the  enemy,      the  coopers.      so  yeah,  maybe  he  hadn’t  been  the  kindest  to  jones’  friend,  archie  andrews,  when  they  first  met.      he  always  found  himself  getting  into  arguments  with  him  and  on  a  few  occasions  did  it  get  physical  between  them,  usually  whenever  sweet  pea  got  too  harsh  towards  betty.      but  they  were  growing  past  that,  they  found  a  few  similarities  amongst  their  many  differences  and  even  though  he  would      NEVER      say  it  out  loud,  sweet  pea  did  enjoy  archie’s  company.

     IT  WAS  UNEXPECTED,      it  had  started  with  sweet  pea  just  giving  archie  some  help  with  school  stuff,  especially  math.      despite  all  the  rumours  that  he  was  just  the  big  dumb  serpent  from  the  southside,  school  actually  came  quite  easy  to  him  and  he  was  happy  to  help  archie  with  some  math  homework,  especially  when  betty  was  busy.      then  it  became  going  to  pops  as  a  thank  you  for  helping  him.      then  once  it  was  known  how  much  they  loved  video  games,  sweet  pea  would  come  over  and  play  some  games.      the  more  the  serpent  relaxed  and  allowed  himself  to  be  open  with  archie,  he  told  him  things  that  he  had  only  told  a  few  people,  mainly  toni  and  fangs.      things  were  just  becoming  very  easy  around  archie.

     SEVERAL  THINGS  SWEET  PEA  NOTICED  ABOUT  ARCHIE      -      1.  archie  was  easily  distracted,  unless  he  was  playing  music,  then  he  was  incredibly  focused.      2.  archie  liked  to  ramble,  usually  if  he  was  frustrated  or  had  a  lot  on  his  mind,  which  sometimes  it  meant  that  not  a  lot  got  done,  especially  if  it  was  about  homework.      3.  archie  had  extremely  interesting  facial  features.      he  sometimes  caught  himself  staring,  especially  if  the  redhead  was  rambling.      he  had  the  most  interesting  eyes,  a  dark  brown  that  shone  whenever  he  was  singing  or  had  played  a  great  game  of  football,  and  his  lips      .      .      .      they  always  caught  sweet  pea’s  attention.      one  thing  was  becoming  painful  clear  to  him      -      sweet  pea  was      ATTRACTED      to  archie  andrews.

     HE  DIDN’T  OFTEN  GET  ATTRACTED  TO  PEOPLE,      preferring  to  keep  everyone  at  a  distance  than  make  the  same  mistakes  as  his  mom.      but  there  was  something  about  the  way  he  felt  when  he  was  around  archie  that  he  really  liked  and  he  didn’t  know  how  much  longer  he  could  deny  it.      sweet  pea  could  be  a  talented  liar,  but  he  didn’t  like  how  much  energy  had  to  go  into  a  good  lie.      but  one  of  the  things  holding  him  back  from  being  completely      HONEST      with  him,  he  had  no  idea  if  the  feelings  were  mutual  or  whether  he  had  just  gotten  himself  in  too  deep.      but  he  didn’t  want  to  keep  denying  it,  he  would  just  have  to  finally  find  the      COURAGE      to  be  completely  honest  with  him.

     ARCHIE  WAS  RAMBLING  AGAIN,      complaining  about  how  math  was  pointless  and  he  probably  wouldn’t  need  it  anyway.      all  sweet  pea  could  focus  on  was  archie’s  lips.      before  he  could  even  stop  himself,  finally  finding  that  courage  he  had  been  looking  for,  a  hand  moving  to  the  back  of  archie’s  head,  pulling  towards  him  as  he  muttered,      “      archie,  shut  up,      ”      before  he  kissed  him,  eyes  closing,  breath  catching  in  his  chest  before  he  let  out  a  deep  sigh.      pulling  back  slowly,  lips  tingling  as  his  eyes  opened  slowly  and  hand  dropped  back  down  to  his  lap,  looking  down  as  he  realised  what  he  had  done,      “      ummmmm      .      .      .      sorry,  i  shouldn’t      .      .      .      i’ve  gotta  go,      ”      he  doesn’t  usually  stumble  over  his  words,  he  was  always  so  direct  but  it  was  clear  that  he  really  liked  archie  and  he  was  terrified  of  being  hurt.      grabbing  his  stuff  as  he  stood  up,  chair  moving  back  as  he  refused  to  look  at  him  and  he  moved  to  leave  the  room.      a  small  part  of  him  hoping  that  archie  would      STOP      him.

“ you are just like your mother ” ( A.K.A you always leave. ohhhh !)

His eyes widened, he was both shocked and hurt by his best friend’s sudden desire to speak so harshly. Archie has never been cruel, his heart was too pure and he was too naïve to possess that essential virtue. Jughead himself had witnessed how many times the other has been betrayed, hurt and walked over but he had never shown those people cruelty,  at least until that moment it was as if he was not even capable of it. His fingers curled into fists, even though he was never going to hurt him, he had to physically hold his anger and pain, bite back the words that were going to be spit in the other’s face. Did Jughead hurt him? Was Archie’s pain finally too much for him to handle? Jughead wondered for how long he was going to stand his ground, he wondered for how long the other’s body would last without breaking but he’d never thought he’d break before him. Not like that.

He was one of the few people to know how complicated Jughead’s relationship with the woman who gave birth to him was. It didn’t matter what she did to him, it didn’t matter what monstrosity she was planning – he was always going to want her by his side. Even when she heard his father and his sister, he was willing to give her a second chance. Maybe it didn’t matter how old he was or how mature he thought he was, he’d always be that lost boy who was left alone with his drunk father, questioning God and cursing the world. And when Archie used that again him, it shattered him. He thought he did better, for he always tried to be there, even when the others didn’t see him and even when he was not needed.

“ Is that so, Archie? Am I the one who left you?” his voice was as high as his blood pressure, lips pressed into a fine line and eyes full of questions. “  Did I leave? Did I really leave? Wasn’t I there when you needed me? Wasn’t I there when you were tired of everyone else? Wasn’t I always waiting for you to realize that I am your best friend?” When did he leave him? He had always been by his side, watching and hoping that Archie would let him in. Starring, like the narrator who so badly wanted to write himself inside of the story of the main character. “ It is easy to blame it on me, isn’t it, pal?  I never left.” Even his father. Even when he lived on the streets, he still managed to check if his old man was breathing.  “ You were just too busy focusing on everyone else. You know what Archie? Maybe you are like your mother. Leaving people behind when you no longer need them. When you no longer want them. That’s what she did to you and your father, didn’t she? That’s what you did to me !”

“I’ve got you”

It was surprising how many roles a person could take in their life, how many times they had to change their skills, the purpose they were made for in order to serve other people’s needs. An average person played around five to ten roles per year, Jughead himself knew how hard it was for one to prepare for their role, the burden of playing a part you weren’t fit for came with his last one – a Serpent. His word of being a weirdo was achieved in a painless manner – the shoe fit perfectly. This one, it was harder to understand, despite the pride and the feeling of power that came with it. Of course, the same applied to his friend Archie Andrews. Many people would say he was not intelligent that he was gifted but his talent didn’t come with using his brain. At that very moment, Jughead would argue with the world to prove them wrong. Today, Archie Andrews possessed that kind of intelligence even the brightest of people didn’t have – he saw with his heart something that was invisible. Today, Archie Andrews had played many roles – a friend, an enemy and a messenger. His last one, however, it seemed as if he has been preparing for it his whole life.

Learning all of the laws wasn’t hard, standing by the serpents proved to be an easier task too. The last one, the beating – it was the final straw. His body was supposed to be fragile, he had been taught what violence was the moment he stepped into the perimeters of Riverdale High, with his knitted beanie that showed his social status – poverty and trash were written all over the shape that was supposed to be a crown. In his case it wasn’t an object showing his supremacy or dominance, it was the thing that scarred him for life – the outsider on the inside. It would have been poetic if it was not so devastatingly tragic – the invisible boy who was only visible to serve as a bad example. Yet, it was not that kind of violence that he got familiar with today.  His flesh was breaking under the pressure of stranger’s fist and instead of bleeding out, he was bleeding in – inside of the Serpents’ family.

When all of it was over,  he was left alone. At least that was how he felt. Toni asked how he was and with the adrenaline in his body, he’d lied to her that he had never felt so euphoric in his life. Then and only then, when he was left with the realization of who he had become and his own blood freely running down his cheeks, another figure approached.  The warm brown eyes were filled with worry and Jughead had no idea how he had found out. But later that night, he understood that it was Archie’s final role for the day – a saviour and he had been preparing for it his whole life.

The drive to his trailer, it was something he didn’t remember. Once the other had questioned him how he truly felt, the idea that he had been doing something right collapsed along with his body. When he came back to his senses, he felt an arm tightly wrapped around his abused ribs – his best friend that he was ready to paint as the enemy had proved to be his anchor once again. Now, the consequences of his decisions weighed on his shoulders like a thousand worlds and he finally realized exactly what he had done. A Serpent. Was it his only way to survive really?

It was easy. Nudity was not something the two best friends had been shy of. After all, Archie Andrews was the only one who had seen what was hidden underneath the knitted beanie and the sarcastic remarks – there was no other nudity like that of the soul. With a smirk, Jughead’s eyes challenged his and he teased him. “ Archie Andrews, aren’t you tired of being the hero?” But he was not prepared for the words that left the other’s lips and once they did, the image he had tried to create for himself broke. That’s how he found himself in the tub, the other scrubbing the blood away and him silently taking him for being there. Yes, he would have survived it without him, they weren’t trying to kill him after all. They were trying to turn him into a snake and the blood in the warm water now was his old skin. But what was good inside of him, the uncorrupted parts of his heart would have died if the redhead hadn’t shown up.So many roles and yet Jughead was convinced that Archie’s purpose was to be the hero. Especially his own.

     SHE  THOUGHT  SHE  HAD  EVERYTHING  UNDER  CONTROL,      she  was  trained  for  this,  raised  to  kill  the  monsters  that  were  a  curse  on  riverdale,  even  if  those  monsters  had  been  friends.      she  had  little  trust  in  anyone,  even  the  others  in  her  family,  hunters  rarely  trusted  anyone  because  trust  had  a  funny  way  of  getting  people  killed.      all  hunters  were  out  for  themselves  and  themselves  only.      that  was  where  archie  andrews  was  different.      he  wasn’t  a  hunter,  he  was  just  along  for  the  ride,  to  try  and  make  sure  nothing  happened  to  her  despite  her  telling  him  that  she’d  be  fine,  or  maybe  he  was  hoping  to  get  through  to  his  friend  one  last  time.      but  no  matter  what,  the  jughead  they  both  knew  was      GONE      when  the  wolf  took  over  and  it  was  a  time  to  act.      but  she  hadn’t  let  her  instincts  drop  when  she  had  been  so  close  to  taking  out  bingo  wilkins,  the  jones’  cousin,  she  hadn’t  even  seen  jughead  till  she  felt  him  knock  her  aside,  the  air  escaping  her  lungs  as  she  is  sprawled  to  the  ground,  her  weapons  slipping  from  her  hand  as  she  tries  to  regain  her  breath  to  get  back  up  and  continue  the  fight.      timing  was  everything  and  she  was  wasting  it  by  trying  to  get  air  back  into  lungs,  knowing  jughead  would  be  stalking  up  behind  her  to  make  sure  she  didn’t  get  a  chance  to  hurt  him  or  any  other  werewolf  again.      BANG !      BANG !      BANG !      three  shots  of  a  gun  and  the  thud  of  a  body  hitting  the  floor  causes  her  to  turn,  a  slight  smile  pulling  at  her  lips  at  the  sight  of  archie  being  the  one  with  the  smoking  gun,  not  even  able  to  take  her  eyes  off  of  him.      she  never  thought  he’d  do  something  like  that,  he  had  saved  her  life,  something  her  own  cousin  hadn’t  even  tried  to  do.      groaning  as  she  finally  was  able  to  stand  back  up,  not  even  backing  up  bo  as  he  tells  archie  to  shoot  them  again.      it  was  always  hard  to  forget  your  first  kill,  especially  if  that  first  was  your  best  friend.      but  archie  andrews  had  saved  her  life,  something  she’d  never  be  able  to  forget.      moving  towards  him  she  lowered  the  gun,  taking  it  from  his  shaking  hands,      “      you  did  the  right  thing.      he  would  have  killed  all  of  us,  archie.      him  and  bingo.      you      SAVED      us,  you  saved  me,      ”      she  told  him,  her  voice  soft  but  firm  at  the  same  time.      free  hand  comes  up  to  cup  his  cheek,  blue  eyes  looking  over  his  face  as  she  leaned  up  to  press  a  firm  kiss  to  his  lips,      “      thank  you.      guess  you  really  are  my  hero  after  all,      ”
