Greater Angle-Winged Katydid (Microcentrum rhombifolium)
These masters of camouflage are native to the southern United States all the way up the east coast. Closely related to criquets and grasshoppers, these insects possess powerful hind legs, allowing them to leap away from danger in moments.
More impressively, though, is the perfect replicate of a leaf detailing their foremost pair of wings, complete with spotting and nervation! This helps them remain hidden from birds while they feast on leaves in the treetops.
Their expert disguises are betrayed by their characteristic chirps, repetitive clicks which make a sound akin to someone saying "ka–ty–did"—thus their common name! Males have two types of songs; a "lisp", repeated intermittently, which is used to attract females, and a courtship song, which is a series of staccato ticks (similar to the sound made by claves). While the female's music-making structures are less well-developed, she still possesses the ability to make calls of her own. Through this "conversation", the male katydid finds the female, allowing them to mate.
