Crisp Point Lighthouse (1904) ARLHS USA-203 / USCG 7-14535 (Active) Inactive 1947-2013 (Privately maintained) Focal plane 60 ft (18 m) White flash every 6 seconds. Located northeast of Paradise Michigan on the U.S. side of Lake Superior. Height 58 ft (17.5 m) Conical brick tower with lantern and gallery attached to a one story brick service building. The lighthouse is painted white, the lantern and gallery are painted black and the lantern roof is painted red. The keepers house and other support buildings have long been demolished or washed away by Lake Superior. A replica of the original fog signal building was built as a visitor center for the station. A 4th order Fresnel lens is on display in the visitors center. Prior to the construction of the lighthouse this site was a life saving station dating back to 1876 known as Life Saving Station Number 10. Crisp Point Lighthouse has been endangered by beach erosion for many years. Volunteers have worked to save the tower and protect the lighthouse from the erosion of Lake Superior. In 2013 a nature preserve was established around the lighthouse to protect the site. Owned and managed by the Crisp Point Light Historical Society. The site is open year round and the tower is open on weekends in season. Located at the end of County Road 412, this is an unpaved, seasonal road for approximately 18 mi (28 km) 4WD is highly recommended to reach this lighthouse. Cell signals and GPS are non-existent in this area. When visiting Crisp Point it is recommended to leave the lighthouse before sunset, as it is very easy to get lost on the winding dirt roads while driving in the dark. This is a very remote area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and it is highly recommended to bring everything you may need with you. Please keep in mind that while visiting Crisp Point you will be 18 mi (28 km) from the nearest paved road, 23 mi (37 km) from the nearest electricity and 27 mi (43 km) from the nearest fuel station or grocery store.
